US Grade 9 - 12
In this flex class, learners will be exposed to ancient Greek mythology. We will explore different myths involving the gods who live on Mount Olympus, how they came to be there, and their interactions with each other and the mortal men over whom they ruled. In video 1 we will learn about the Greek creation myths about how our world came to be. In video 2, we will learn about the Titans who came before the gods on Mount Olympus and their importance in the early formation of Greek mythology. In video 3 we will focus on Zeus, the king god of all Olympic gods and men. In videos 4 & 5 we will begin to explore the rest of the gods with Hera, Hestia, and Poseidon. We will continue with new stories and myths every week. Throughout all of the classes, students will be exposed to photos of statues of the Greek gods, the temples where the Greek people worshipped them, and some paintings or illustrations depicting the Greek gods and goddesses. (I will make sure there are no nude depictions, or at the very least that the pictures are cropped or censored appropriately.) The material will be presented in a slide show accompanied by lectures and stories in a story-telling format. Students are encouraged to post and ask questions and share the knowledge they already possess about Greek mythology. Sometimes we hear stories differently and I'd love to know what your learner knows, too! We will have an interactive activity every week for students to test their knowledge of Greek mythology through Outschool approved platforms like Google Slides presentations, Kahoot quizzes, Pear Deck slides, and Quizlet activities. Every week I will post the video lesson as well as information and links detailing what activities students should do in addition to watching the video. Students will be prompted through written posts to discuss the material presented, as well as the questions and activities each week. I will make every effort to ensure all students feel comfortable sharing and discussing Greek mythology together through messages and class discussion posts. Every week, some form of conversation through the group post with me or with other classmates posts will be required. I will be available for questions and comments via email throughout the course, so feel free to message me personally if there are any questions that a learner doesn't want to share via the class page. I am so excited to share these stories with and to in turn learn from your learner! Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will discuss the idea of Greek gods and goddesses in a mythical, fictional sense. There will be mention of babies, marriage, and infidelity (explained to students as unfaithfulness to a married partner by having other girlfriends or boyfriends). We will talk about war, killing, and battles, but we will not go into bloody details. Many of the visual materials are paintings and statues that are scantily clad or indeed, nude, but those will be tastefully cropped so that not too much is revealed for the young learners.
