Travel with me to discover and explore The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I live near the national park and have hiked, camped, and participated in citizen science activities and ranger-led events there many times. In this five day camp, we will learn about the history, plants & animals, hiking , and places to visit in the The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Week 1Lesson 1Creation of the national parkThe history, people, geography, and geology of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.Lesson 2Plants & AnimalsThe kids will be introduced to some of the plants & animals in the park, and how to use a field guide.Lesson 3Day HikesThe kids will learn how to choose hiking trails in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park ,and pack a day pack for hiking. The kids will learn about elevation of a trail and how to read the trail information in a hiking guide as well as how to read a topography map.Lesson 4Virtual Hiking DayWe are going on a virtual hike!The kids will need a water bottle, a snack, and their packed backpack from meeting 3.Lesson 5Activities in the GSMNPThe kids will learn about different activities they can do when they visit the national park.
