Class Experience

🔶 NEW SECTION FOR OLDER TEENS 🔶
This is a live on-going class that meets weekly. Dragons and Creatures here, there, and everywhere in this class...

In this on-going weekly class, we will design and sculpt a different themed dragon or fantasy creature in each class. Social discussion is part of the design process. What aspects of our element can we incorporate into our dragons? What position works best? Can we add additional items to expand on our design?

Students are encouraged to take a basic sculpting class prior to starting this class, since this is not meant as a step by step class (although students are more than welcome to follow along while I sculpt!). My Sleeping Dragon and Standing Dragon Sculpting classes go over basic formations of the parts of the dragon, such as wings, attachment, etc., if students want to learn more technique.

Elemental dragons are the five main species of dragons related to the classical elements of the world around us. Plus 12 elements of Nature and 5 Guardian Spirit Elements.

Some Elementals are: Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Wood, Storm, Lava, Magma, Energy, Ice, Rock, Astral, Flower, Shadow, Hypnosis, Venom, Light and Moon

Students will add their fun themed suggestions to the Wheel of Mystery for our "Spin the Wheel" weeks. We will discuss and design our creatures based off of the spin!

Upcoming Themes:
Garden Beast
Wyvern
A Kumiho (9 tailed fox dragon)
Lindworm
Dragonnet
West African Snub Nosed Dragon
Quetzalcoatl
Gnome
Norse Kraken
…more to come

*Please Note that we discuss and collaborate to design our creatures together, but we don't go over step by step techniques, since we all create our own unique pieces.

Your choice of sculpting material (I will be using Polymer Bake Clay, Sculpey III brand) in a variety of colors - check the week’s theme
Note: polymer clay in “Translucent” makes great wings and marbled effects!
Mica Powders are great for effects too!
Glass beads make great eyes! I use 4.0 size or 6mm
Basic sculpting tools, rolling pin
You may use wire or pins if you would like, but we will not be creating a skeleton together.
Any Glass or Metal or Wood findings that you may want to add to your sculpts. Plastic CANNOT be baked!

Polymer Clay needs to be baked in an oven and requires parental guidance.

Hi There!
I'm Lori...a graduate of F.I.T in NYC. I've worked in different areas of the design industry since 1991, from illustration, pattern making, garment construction to designing full story boards for buyers. I tutored Fashion Illustration for a few years to help other students complete their professional portfolios before their interviews. Besides getting creative, I LOVE animals! I have quite a few furry little beasts. Right now, my profession is Graphic Design, but fashion illustration and design is still what I do when I need to unwind from technology. I believe that once you learn the basics of how to get that creativity out of your mind and onto paper, you open up a whole new world, being able to share and build on your talents.

*Teacher Rori
They/Them
As an alumni of Cleveland Institute of Art with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Game Design they have a passion for interactive art and how they can push the boundaries of what interactive art means. Having been a visual arts assistant at their old high school Interlochen Arts Academy during the summers, teaching others and seeing the joy in what people create has motivated Rori to pursue teaching. In their free time Rori likes to aquascape. Creating aquariums of any variety of sizes and making little beautiful habitats for their favorite type of fish a Betta fish, they currently have 2 bettas and 4 tanks.

She/Her
Throughout my career in education, I have developed a strong foundation for fostering creativity and critical thinking among students. I have had the privilege of designing and implementing art programs that engage learners and inspire them to explore their unique artistic voices in many afterschool programs since 2019. My extensive experience across various mediums—such as painting, yarn and needlework, jewelry making, and digital arts—has equipped me with the versatility to adapt my teaching methods and cater to diverse learning styles.

*Teacher Jonathan
I have been working in the design/visual arts world for the last 6 years. From designing websites, to doing personal commissions, art is something I’m very passionate about. I had the chance to live in New York for the last 3 years, and had the opportunity to visit world-renowned museums and galleries such as The Met, MoMA, Guggenheim etc. I also curated an Art Gallery with over 200 artworks from local artists in upstate NY. I’m thrilled to bring my experience to these lessons and share that enthusiasm with my students.
