Class Experience

Welcome to Graphic Design Module 2 - Light!

These modules are designed to follow on from Graphic Design 101. The modules do not need to be completed in order, and as such, you may choose to begin at any time with any module. Each month a different module will be available, meaning you will be able to complete earlier modules later when they are scheduled.

PLEASE NOTE: Students must have completed Graphic Design 101, or have detailed knowledge of Adobe Photoshop in order to complete these modules.

In this 4-part module, students will learn all about creating the illusion of light in their designs.

Each week we will revise key tools used previously, and build on our knowledge. Students will follow along in the first part of each lesson, completing simple tasks, and then in the second part, students will use their new skills to complete a task independently.

Week 1: Students will experiment with using paintbrushes to create light, and begin to understand the various tools used to create the illusion of shine and glow.
Week 2: Students will add to their skills, by completing a project in class where light is created to give the illusion of magic.
Week 3: Students will build on their knowledge from weeks 1 and 2, to create the appearance of light from a fabricated light source.
Week 4: Students will learn some basic animation skills, turning a light on and off.

At the end of each lesson students will upload their work completed in class, to the classroom. Students are encouraged to comment on the work of their fellow students.

Between sessions, students will also work on a module project, based on light. They will receive continued feedback and support throughout their project.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in English/Language Arts
Master's Degree in Education from Northumbria University
Bachelor's Degree in English from University of Newcastle
I'm a qualified teacher, experienced in teaching English, History, Music, and Art. I home educated my two children, who are now at university, and I have taught in mainstream schools, and in Special-Ed schools.

I have also taught piano, guitar, singing, and music theory, taking students through grade examinations.

I am experienced in teaching the British GCSEs, and through home-schooling, I taught my own children using American curriculum. I teach Language Arts, English Literature and Language, Creative Writing, Poetry - both writing, and reading, and many other fantastic and interesting topics.

I teach writing skills using the Writing Revolution techniques, and have seen students improve their writing skills rapidly using some of the techniques applied.

In addition, I worked as a graphic designer for 10 years, working from home, and offer graphic design and video editing classes, using Adobe Creative Suite, DaVinci Resolve, and soon, Affinity creative suite.

Growth Mindset is very important in my classes, and I encourage it in all learners - Growth Mindset is the belief that even if you can't do something or don't understand something, then you CAN learn how to do it or understand it. Growth Mindset says "I can't do it YET, but I can learn." Learning happens through making mistakes, and then modifying your approach, changing what you do, to improve. I encourage all learners to try, and to feel comfortable making mistakes, because that's how we all learn.
