Class Experience

Texting and verbal slang are widely accepted in many scenarios today. However, good grammar skills will set you apart academically and professionally. Your grammar, spelling, and punctuation is how you represent yourself to the world and is often the first impression you leave others. It is my goal to see students through to success and mastery learning. The first step to mastery learning of the grammar concepts of this course is to memorize and learn 50 prepositions. These prepositions are foundational and are woven throughout every aspect of grammar.

At the onset of the first class in Week 1, students will complete a pre-assessment. I will save these until the end of the semester when students will then complete the post-assessment in Week 15. Both will be graded and returned to students so that students have tangible evidence of their progress and efforts. These assessments will not be calculated into course final grade. I am happy to meet with students individually to discuss the pre-assessment and post-assessment results.

This is the first course of a two-semester course covering 7th grade grammar. Students will interact with classmates and teacher using lecture, slides, video clips, discussion. Weekly plan is outlined below.

Week 1--Sept 8: Pre-test, prepositions, prepositional phrases, helping verbs; memorization of prepositions list
Week 2--Sept 15: Prepositions, infinitives, prepositions vs. adverbs, subject of imperative sentences
Week 3--Sept 22: Prepositions, direct objects, compound direct objects
Week 4--Sept 29: Prepositions review; PREPOSITIONS TEST
Week 5--Oct 6: Verbs, action/linking, verb phrases, regular/irregular, direct objects
Week 6--Oct 13: Verbs, sit/set, lie/lay, rise/raise, to be, linking verbs
Week 7--Oct 20: Verbs, predicate nominatives, predicate adjectives
Week 8--Oct 27: Verbs, action/linking verbs, subject/verb agreement; VERB TEST 1
Week 9--Nov 3: Verbs, verb tenses
Week 10--Nov 10: Verbs, transitive/intransitive, indirect objects
Week 11--Nov 17: Verb review; VERB TEST 2
Week 12--No class: Thanksgiving
Week 13--Dec 3: Nouns; concrete/abstract, common/proper, singular/plural, possessive
Week 14--Dec 10: Nouns; predicate nominatives, nouns/appositives, gerunds
Week 15--Dec 17: Interjections/conjunctions; Course review; NOUNS/INTERJECTIONS/CONJUNCTIONS TEST

4 tests as noted above in Week 4, Week 8, Week 11, Week 15. Weekly graded assignments. Schedule may be subject to change.
Learning Goals
This 7th grade grammar course is based on the prepositional approach to grammar. Based on the prepositional approach to grammar, this 2-semester course includes extensive grammar concepts, capitalization, punctuation, sentence types, phrases, clauses, gerunds, appositives, and other grammar concepts. In Unit 1, material presented includes prepositions, verbs, nouns, interjections, and conjunctions. Unit 2 includes adjectives, sentence types, sentences/fragments/run-ons, phrases and clauses, adverbs, pronouns, punctuation, capitalization, and letters. This course is ideally suited for 7th graders with a good foundation in language arts. However, older students who need to solidify their grammar and writing skills would also benefit and may be considered for enrollment.
