Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 10
Intermediate - Advanced Level
This 15-week course will cover 9th & 10th Grade English Languages Arts Common Core Standards in a multi-age setting.

Literacy development is a lifelong journey that is composed of many complex concepts and understandings that are not limited to the written Western page. In 2024, reading and writing has taken on new lengths. Importantly, we are now exposed to a much wider variety of literature in the form of film, documentary, theatre, podcast, blogs, songs, webpages, magazine articles, and so much more. Literacy includes the capacity to learn to communicate, read, write, think, explore, and solve problems. Literacy skills are used in paper, digital, and live interactions where people:

    * analyze critically and solve problems

    * understand and communicate meaning

    * create a variety of creative and analytic content

    * read, view, and listen for fun

    * make connections both personally and intertextually
    * engage in personal summaries and analyses

    * and more!

With examples, support, and practice, students will have the opportunity to deepen their critical skills as they work with fun, poignant, age-appropriate, and engaging content… all the while participating in focused conversations and completing core standards.

Weekly schedule:

Video lesson with exposure and instruction of the assigned literature and writing assignments. They will leave with a literary assignment (written, video, audio, or graphic) at the end of each lesson to be submitted if they would like feedback on them.

I provide written feedback on all submitted assignments and can grade assignments upon request.

Learners should be prepared to engage with the material to the best of their personal abilities. I will make sure that all learners feel safe, welcome, and leave with a positive view of literacy!

Learning Goals

Develop critical analysis and problem-solving skills by engaging with diverse forms of literature and media and practicing techniques for understanding and interpreting content.
Enhance communication skills through a variety of written, audio, visual, and graphic assignments that allow you to express their thoughts creatively and analytically.

Learning Needs
This class is designed to meet learners' individual and personal needs and can accommodate ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, amongst others.
Parental Guidance
Parents are the best judge of their learners' sensitivities and maturity. Some of the pieces we will read are intense, and a few bring up sensitive issues, such as innate violence. I would be happy to provide links for parents to preview any of the literature they are concerned about.

I have 20 years experience working with teens with academics and creativity, whether it may be with sharpening writing skills, honing in on proper grammar, and even discovering one's true writer's voice. Literature studies are the backbone of any society and bridge the gap between distant and not so distant timelines, ethnicities, cultures, and moral values that propel humanity forward.
