Learners will be given the chance to respond to the poem explored during the class.Class Experience
Over 5 weeks learners will explore five different poems, developing their confidence when tackling poetry. They will learn how we can consider language, imagery and structure when analyzing a poem. We will build confidence in developing a personal response to a poem. Please note - In week 3 we will explore a classic poem from World War I. Themes of death and war are explored. In Week 5 we explore the poet's outlook on racial and colonial discrimination. Themes of injustice, identity and anger are explored. Week 1 - 'A Poison Tree' by William Blake - Extended metaphors Week 2 - 'The Witch' by Mary Elizabeth Coleridge - Comprehension and summarizing Week 3 -'Dulce et Decorum Est' by Wilfred Owen - Metaphor and simile Week 4 - 'Like an Heiress' by Grace Nicholls - Themes and structures Week 5 - ‘Checking Out Me History’ by John Agard - Structure and language These lessons are teacher-led, but discussion and sharing are encouraged. Optional homework will be offered. Learners will the opportunity to respond to the poem during the lesson. They may choose to write a poem themselves, or to respond more formally.
