Class Experience

In this 4-week crash course students will gain confidence in their public speaking skills by learning speech-making skills and nerve-calming strategies and then putting them to practice each week by preparing and presenting a speech to their peers. Each week students will constructively critique each other to help each other improve! This class has a small size in order to facilitate a more comfortable and productive learning environment for everyone. Students will walk away from this crash course with an increased confidence in public speaking and conversations in general. I hope you'll join us! This is what we will cover each week:

Week 1: Learners will introduce themselves to their peers before learning some basic public speaking techniques and confidence boosting skills! They will also be introduced to the concept of constructive criticism and learn how to give it and strategies to receive it. They will be assigned their 1st speech topic to be presented in next week's class.

Week 2: Learners will begin by presenting their speech they have prepared based on the topic. Students will put the skills they learned in the 1st class to practice. While listening to each others' speeches, peers will provide constructive criticism they will take into next week's speech. In additon students will be introduced to attention grabbers as well as strategies to calm their nerves while speaking in public! New speech topic is introduced for week 3!

Week 3: Students present their speeches, drawing from the skills learned in week 1 as well as the constructive criticism from their peers the week before. This week students will learn about why the way we present a speech is so important as well as how to incorporate more ENTHUSIASM! Students are introduced to week 4's free topic in which they end the course with a speech on a topic of their choosing to showcase what they have learned!

Week 4: In the last session of this course students will present their final speech on a topic of their choosing to show off what they have learned and the confidence they have gained over the past 4 weeks! A final, informal progress report is issued by the teacher and peers, followed by a fun review quiz to wrap up!

This class will be a 100% judgement-free zone and a comfortable learning environment for even the most shy of learners!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there! I am a creative, fun and patient Environmental Educator, Spanish and English teacher, and certified Permaculture designer. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies, French and Environmental Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Go Badgers!) as well as a TESOL certification I received in Thailand before teaching there for a year. I am a former Peace Corps volunteer and spent four years in Mexico as an Environmental Education volunteer working with kids in rural schools. I have also worked as an online English teacher for over a year. Teaching kids is truly my greatest joy!

I am passionate about the environment and love teaching kids about composts, gardens, energy, and climate change! I am also fluent in Spanish and enjoy teaching fun vocabulary and introductory conversation classes. I also love working with kids on life skills such as public speaking and confidence building and try to incorporate them as much as possible in my classes.

When I'm not teaching you can find me embroidering, reading mystery books, writing and tending to my vegetable garden. I can't wait to meet you, let's learn something fun together!
