Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Beginner Level
The Spalding Method, developed by Romalda Spalding, is an approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling. It relies on a set of phonograms, which are written symbols representing sounds. These phonograms help students understand the relationships between letters and sounds, facilitating the process of decoding and encoding words.

In the Spalding Method, there are 70 basic phonograms, each representing a distinct sound or combination of sounds. Some examples of these phonograms include:

Single Letter Phonograms:

a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z

Digraphs (two letters representing one sound):
sh, ch, th, wh, ph, ng, ck

Trigraphs (three letters representing one sound):
tch, dge

Vowel Teams:
ai, ay, ea, ee, ie, oa, oe, ue, ui, oi, oy, au, aw, ew, ow (as in cow), ow (as in snow)

Consonant Blends:
bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, tw

These phonograms are systematically taught and practiced to help students become proficient readers, writers, and spellers. By learning the phonograms and their corresponding sounds, students develop strong phonemic awareness and decoding skills essential for reading and spelling success.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to recognize and fluently pronounce the 70 phonograms by the end of this course.
