6 hrs 40 mins in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Students' "written" weekly homework will be a combination of creativity-powered drawing, writing, coloring-by-note. Their weekly practice challenge will involve playing something simple on the piano. I will provide e-books and accompanying videos of activities to support learners' and their caregivers through the weekly activities. These activities are FUN, playful and reinforce learning in class while helping them develop a true music practice in their lives.Assessment
Students will receive a certificate for their completion of the class, with an accompanying sheet of materials covered, so that you can share it with your child's eventual piano lesson teacher. (I will make personalized notes to communicate each child's level of comfort on each topic learned.)Class Experience
The hardest part about music lessons is getting started and sticking with it. How many grown-ups do we know who say "I played piano as a kid, but let it go. I just didn't get into it." What a tragedy! This 8-week class gives young learners a joyful, playful, and highly empowered start to piano learning, so that when they do begin private lessons, they know basic knowledge, and have a deep intrinsic connection to music. Starting musical training in early childhood with an instructor who deeply understands and designs activities around specific early childhood developmental stages offers kids a life-changing start to their musical journey. Topics that might be tedious or frustrating to learn in a traditional lesson settings, can be made FUN when you add community, creative expression and games. Class begins each week with playful ear-training and gameshow-style piano vocabulary games and ice-breakers. Students will show off their weekly projects (which are provided in the student workbook!), learn tools for giving each other support, and learn about and hear some of the world's greatest piano players! We will start by playfully learning a common vocabulary: finger names, note names, treble clef, bass clef, etc. By the end of the session, each child will have either begun or completed** their first piano song: Ode To Joy. (**Dependent on their developmental stage, learning style, etc. It's not a competition, and all musicians learn at different speeds!) Take-home activities from the workbook also offer parent tips so that you can learn the instrument along with your child. Each week, students complete practice goals and complete a creative activity. Students will graduate from this class with the knowledge necessary for lessons so that when they are ready for formal instruction, they can have a more fulfilling experience! Through weekly "musician affirmations" they will also identify as musicians, which research shows most predicts whether students will continue music learning as they grow. This class is designed for students with no experience. Week-by-week overview: Week of March 22nd: Finding our C's and naming our fingers! Week of March 29th: C-D-E-F-G Notes! Week of April 5th: Skips and Steps! Week of April 12th: Pitch Goes Up And Down! Week of April 26th: Ode To Joy - week 1 Week of May 10th: Ode to Joy - week 2 Week of May 17th: Recap, Games, and concerts - oh my!
