What will they learn and how? Students will be introduced to the vocabulary, definitions and visual properties of each of the 3 Euclidian Geometric Dimensions. (1-D, 2-D, and 3-D). This information will then be used to complete worksheets and help solidify knowledge of each concept. To add some zest to the class, we will be comparing the different shapes and properties in different dimensions, to each other, by using brief stories from two books. “Flatland” by Edwin A. Abbott and “Flatterland, like flatland but more so…” by Ian Stewart are books that help visualize and compare different ‘objects’ in different dimensions. They take a very Solid Geometry and turn it into learning with a story of different worlds. The students will get an opportunity to not only visualize Geometry differently but combine literature and math. The end result gives students the opportunity to see their own world and its connection to Euclidean Geometry, so they don’t ‘learn’, they UNDERSTAND, and hopefully, it helps them to expand their thinking beyond the 3-D realm. What background knowledge is required? Students should at least be at the point in their math concepts where they understand all the Operations with whole numbers. (About 6th Grade) This class is for all students who have a need to add Geometry to their math concepts, before they head into Algebra. Homework will be worksheets that cover Geometric concepts. They have been chosen to not only practice and test knowledge but to include vocabulary and instruction for each concept. In order to fully learn the concepts, completing the worksheets is necessary. How will students be assessed? When a worksheet is emailed to me, Masters will be provided to check mastery. This gives feedback to me, as well as allowing students to check their progress. If they have additional questions, they can either bring their questions to class, or email me and I will address them.
Learning Goals
The goal of this class is to review/learn the Geometric concepts and formulas for 1, 2 and 3 Dimensional Geometry, to prepare for Advanced Pre-Algebra and Algebra classes.

Supply List
The books "Flatland" and "Flatterland,...", in their entirety, would appeal to the older math student. It is not necessary to purchase them, as I will only be using the basic story line and some of the examples. This is so all ages will understand the stories and Geometric concepts. Each class 1-4, will provide all material, worksheets and masters, as well as any video links. The student will want to always have a pencil, graph paper, plain paper and a ruler/straight edge for drawing. A simple calculator is nice when working simple formulas for Perimeter, Area, Volume and Surface Area.

Math is not just learning numbers and rules. It is learning about how math makes our world go around for us. Working in the aerospace industry for years, I love to see how math problems are put to the test and the beauty that unfolds. I want students to not just 'look' at Geometry, but to really 'see' it.
