1-2 hours per week. Each week a question will be posted to the discussion board that students will be asked to answer. The students will also be provided with readings and activities pertaining to the subject matter. The assignments do not have a time limit, so students can complete their assignments at their own pace. More information will be provided when the class is in process.Assessment

US Grade 4 - 7
In this class, students will learn about the geological processes that formed some of our most amazing underwater structures. They will explore topics such as plate tectonics, hydrothermal vents, seafloor spreading, and different geological events that brought about some of the most fascinating ocean structures. Students will explore how amazing areas such as the mid-ocean ridges, hydrothermal vents, and underwater volcanoes are geologically important to our environment and how they can provide a broader understanding of how our biological systems in the marine world have changed as a result of their presence. In addition, students will get an introduction to the amazing world of underwater technology used by researchers to discover these amazing places and how continual research has changed the way life in the deep sea has existed and evolved. Students will work with Nearpod, an interactive software program that allows students to participate in discussion boards, answer short quizzes, and watch interactive videos that pertain to course material. There are no prerequisites for this course, just a love for animals and the environment.
Learning Goals
Students will develop an understanding of underwater geological processes in learning about hydrothermal vents, tectonic plates, and plate boundaries.
Students will develop an understanding of a variety of underwater geological formations such as ridges, volcanoes, and caves.
Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Mid-Ocean Ridge
In this lesson, students will learn about the mid-ocean ridge, an interconnected range of underwater volcanic mountains that spans the globe. In studying this concept, students will learn about plate boundaries, tectonic plate activities, and the formation of this amazing ridge system.
32 mins of video lessons
Lesson 2:
Hydrothermal Vents
In beginning our lessons on underwater vents and volcanoes, students will learn about the geological factors that contribute to the formation of these underwater volcanoes, as well as gain an understanding of vents themselves, from black smokers to the unique geothermally heated water that is discharged from the vents.
24 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
Underwater Volcanoes
In the second part of our lesson on underwater volcanoes and vents, students will continue to study the unique features of underwater volcanoes in exploring a submarine volcano and looking at the correlation between volcanic activity and severe weather events such as tsunamis.
29 mins of video lessons
Lesson 4:
Underwater Caves & Technology
In this lesson, students will explore underwater caves and learn about geological formations such as stalactites and stalagmites that form in these underwater environments. In studying underwater caves, students will learn about the formation of these structures, from erosion or other factors, in forming caves of limestone or from magma chambers. Students will further explore this concept by investigating a scientific diving exploration of one of these caves and learn about technologies used.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My entire life I wanted to explore the ocean and the environment. I have always had a great appreciation for the processes that are not completely understood and the unknowns that have yet to be discovered in the environment. At the beginning of my professional career in research, I worked as a naturalist on a whale watch boat and as a laboratory technician working on environmental clean-up projects such as water and land pollution. Then I moved into my dream job of being a research chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in marine & geochemistry where I was able to be in the foundation of the research community and learn from many amazing scientists & researchers who devoted their lives to exploring the mysteries of the environment as well as protecting the animals and organisms living in it. For me, working as a student mentor with graduate and post-graduate students, made this experience one I will always cherish. As a teacher, I want my students to be excited about what they are learning, and with my background in research, I will work extra hard to make sure that if there is an aspect of a topic that a student is interested in, I will make every effort to alter my lessons to include those topics.
