Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Advanced Level
This is an asynchronous course which means there are no live meanings. Students will receive feedback from me within 48 hours of completing an activity. If students have questions regarding the activities, I will answer them as soon as possible.

This class is designed for learners who have a good grasp on the following concepts: decimals, fractions, proportions, positive and negative numbers, graphing, ratios, and general problem solving skills.

All activities will be higher-order thinking based and will involve multiple math concepts. Students who are prepared to solve and defend their work will be good candidates for this course.

Each week/lesson will focus on a real-life math activity and will include the following: Directions and skill review, as well as a real-life math activity/project to complete.

Week 1: Cost of Living/Budgeting
Week 2: Data and Statistics in the Real World
Week 3: Understanding scale as a component of proportional reasoning
Week 4: Using proportional reason to scale an object or art piece

Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Budgeting
Students will work with decimals and whole numbers in order to apply properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to real world situations involving budgeting and money management.
7 mins of video lessons
Lesson 2:
Data/Statestics
This lesson will build upon basic ideas of mean, median, mode and variability in order to look at actual data and draw conclusions from it.
Lesson 3:
Proportional Reasoning
This lesson will build upon the idea of proportional reasoning to solve problems, skills covered will be ratios, rates, and proportions in order to scale an object or picture.
Lesson 4:
Proportional Reasoning Part 2
Using art or architecture students will problem solve to scale a real life object either larger or smaller. They will need to develop a method for determining the unit and the ratio in order to build something to scale.

I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think

I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.

I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
