Gender & Women's Studies: Introduction to Inclusivity & Diversity FLEX
What's included
Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
Learning occurs when we push ourselves beyond our comfort zone to imagine different possibilities. I imagine a classroom that is intentionally inclusive, making sure we are caring for one another's identities, histories, and experiences. As a professor of women and gender studies, I believe that we can create a more equitable and open world when we take time to learn about marginalized communities and identities. In this 6-week FLEX class, there will be no live classes and learners will be taking the classes at their own pace. We will use the Outschool classroom for communication weekly. Should any questions or concerns arise, don't hesitate to reach out via email or by posting on our course wall. Recorded classes will consist of brief and informative slides, comprehension and recall questions by teacher, and prompts to promote reflection. Every class will include: -Personal check-in in the form of a fun ice breaker -GWS concept of the day (see topic schedule below) -Person of week Part 1 Weekly Topic Schedule: Week 1: The Women's Movement- What is Feminism? Week 2: Women and Labor Movements Week 3: LGBT Movements and Leaders Week 4: Women's Studies Programs are Born! Week 5: What are Gender Roles/Expectations? Week 6: Inclusive Personal Pronouns Teacher will post weekly recording and materials by TUESDAY 4PM PST. After viewing the weekly course content, learners will have the option to complete a "3-3-3 comprehension sheet." This OPTIONAL comprehension activity asks learners to complete: 3 new vocabulary words, 3 concepts/facts and 3 questions posed by learner. Remember, you don't have to have the answers to these questions! They can be open ended questions that you create about the topics. Learners will learners will have the option to post their 3-3-3 sheet so that other enrolled learners can view, comment, engage and maybe even answer questions posed by peers. I will also include extra resources including defined terms, fact sheets, and other fun learning activities. These are all optional. :) Learners will be invited to introduce themselves via the Outschool classroom with picture or video telling us a fun fact about themselves and what they are excited to learn about. There will also be an opportunity to share student-led current events or connections they made with the course topics. Posting pictures, video or comments throughout out course will create a fun collaborative and community based classroom, but is totally optional :)

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am an experienced educator who has taught at nearly every level of instruction from pre-k to college level! My very first job out of high school was as a bilingual instructional aide for the Head Start program in my city. I currently teach undergraduate students who are preparing to become K-12 teachers.
I earned a PhD in humanities, but specifically from Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies (GWSS). I am currently a professor of GWSS at my local state university. As an expert in this field, I will provide multiple perspectives that celebrate and highlight the contributions of women and people of diverse gender identities. We will create an intentionally inclusive class space wherein all students are welcome and celebrated while we learn together.
