US Grade 5 - 6
In this 1-time, 1-hour "game show style" lesson, learners will solve "real-world" word problems in six categories (basic operations (misc.), fractions, decimals, percentages, basic algebra, and geometry) in the quest to be named the next Master Mathlete. Before beginning the game show, there will be a mini lesson on using the "CUBES" strategy to identify the question being asked and the information needed to solve word problems. Learners will then take turns selecting a category and dollar amount to select the type and difficulty of the problem they would like to solve. The learner that has earned the highest dollar amount by the end of the game will be named the Master Mathlete.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello, My name is Robin Jarred. I am a certified Elementary teacher and have been teaching for over 25 years. Over the years I have taught 2nd-11th grades. The majority of those years were spent in 4th or 5th grade, teaching all subject areas. In 2005, I earned a master’s degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Math & Science. For over 6 years now, I have been teaching English as a Second Language working with children in China using an online platform, as well as Outschool.
I am looking forward to encouraging students to be enthusiastic about learning by building confidence in their abilities. I plan to offer courses that reinforce the important skills that are used cross-curricular through interactive games and activities. Such as word study, test taking skills, fluency and comprehension as well as important concepts in math and science. Such as order of operations, math facts, and the scientific method.
I believe that learning should be fun and interesting for students in order to foster a love of being a lifelong learner. In the course work I plan to offer I will cultivate a love of learning through hands-on activities, games, and most importantly encouragement and positive reinforcement. My hope is to introduce activities that spark curiosity in each student. I look forward to working with you and your kids here at Outschool!
