Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
In this self-paced course, students will explore foundational concepts in computer programming and game development using the Godot game engine. Throughout over six hours of instructional video lessons, lesson and unit reviews, and downloadable art files, students with little or no experience will create a full 2D space-shooter style video game. By the end of this course, learners will have built a strong understanding of how to create 2D games, as well as the confidence to expand on them.

All of my instruction is laser focused on fostering true understanding of fundamental game development programming concepts. Students are never simply told where to click or what to type to produce a quick result. We always take the time to fully explain what we are doing and why it works - or why it didn’t. I’ll be there all along the way to offer guidance, feedback, and troubleshooting through the issues that can sometimes frustrate and discourage new programmers.

The Godot game engine uses a GDScript to write game logic. It is extremely similar to Python - one of the world's most popular and widely used programming languages. Much of what we learn here will be directly transferable to Python, as well as other professionally used engines and languages.

I work hard to ensure a consistent and high quality on-demand classroom experience. This includes clear and concise lesson plans, thoughtful course structure, high fidelity audio and video, and accessibility considerations.

Notes:

Godot is fully compatible with both Windows and Mac. While all of the instruction in this course is done using a Windows computer, you can complete the entire course using either operating system.

This course guides students into fully-fledged, real world programming. This is much different than programs like Scratch or other block coding style systems. We will be writing actual code and encountering all sorts of bugs that come with it. It's expected that students will run into unique issues and errors along the way that are not covered in the material.

Hello! I'm Joey and I'm excited to meet you. As a parent, I understand how vital early childhood education is. The fact that you are here, searching for the best instructor for your learners, means that you know how important it is too. I take this responsibility seriously, and work hard to provide individual attention and support to all of my students.

I've worked professionally as a software developer, as well as an adjunct college professor teaching introductory and advanced computer programming courses. My passions and class topics are wide ranging, from tabletop role-playing games to 3D modeling, astronomy, and art! To each of my classes I bring the same philosophy: that we truly grow when we connect what we learn to what is important to us. No matter if it's academic study or a social activity, I teach with the intention of inspiring students to make those connections and get excited about learning. I can't wait to see you in class!
