Class Experience

In this fun, four-day watercolor camp, your young artist will create four fun and very different paintings while learning about wax resistance and how to add texture by only using a clean, wet paintbrush. I believe in letting children express themselves in their paintings and that mistakes are only a chance to create something better.

At the beginning of each class, the campers will get a chance to say hi and tell everyone something fun about themselves. We will then go over the supply list and wake our paints up, so they are ready to use. I will guide the learners step-by-step through each day's painting. Your young artists will be allowed to choose colors and make suggestions on how they would like to make each painting their own. The goal of each day is to have fun, create a piece of art that they are proud of, and learn something new. At the end of each class, everyone will have a chance to show off their painting (if they choose to) and say bye to their new friends.

For this class, it is IMPORTANT that learners have paper specifically meant for watercolor painting (not printer paper, cardstock, or mixed media paper) and soft bristle brushes meant for watercolor; this will lead to less frustration for your learner down the road. I will provide links to several items on Amazon in the supplies section if you need to order them.

Camp Schedule:
Day 1: Slices of Watermelon- We will first draw our watermelon and add seeds using crayons or oil pastels. Next the learner will get to paint in their watermelon. They will learn about wax resistance and how to make a color fade from dark to light.

Day 2: Silly Rainbow Fish- The students will draw a cute fish and then paint it in letting each new color mix a little with the last. The students will also learn how to use a straw to create some fun fins.

Day 3: Sunset- The campers will use wax resistance and work on color blending to create a beautiful sunset.

Day 4: Doodle Birds in a Tree- On our last day, the campers will learn about the wet-on-wet technique and also how to layer colors to get special effects.

Hi everyone! I am a graduate of Western Washington University with a B.A. in English and a minor in art history. I grew up in Washington State but have lived out on the east coast for most of my adult life. I have been a nanny, homework coach, and tutor for over 20 years. I love working with younger children and teens to help them realize the potential within. I work with kids ages 4 to 18 in reading, reading comprehension, reading remediation, grammar, language arts, elementary/middle school math, pre-algebra, organizational/study skills, HSPT, and ISEE exams.

Whenever I work with a child, whether it's in academics, art/crafting, or baking, I meet the child where they are and build them up from there; I am patient, kind, and understanding. Every child must know that a mistake is not a bad thing, just one step on the path to learning something new and that these steps are the building blocks of understanding.

During my free time, I love to paint, craft, and bake! I have been creating art and crafts for the last ten-plus years and selling them at local shows. I make 3-D paper flowers, burlap wreaths, stamped coasters, work with alcohol inks, fluid painting, watercolor painting, decoupage, and bookbinding. I hope to share all of these with the learners on Outschool!

Finally, I love to bake and cook! I used to sell my bread at a local farmers' market when I lived in Washington State. I am continually trying a new recipe or perfecting one of my own to share with everyone. When I was a nanny, baking and cooking were two of my favorite things to do with the kids. I taught them to bake cookies, bread, breakfast, and even how to roast a chicken.

Thank you for allowing me to work with your children and helping them realize they can do whatever they set their minds to. The only limits they have are the ones they place on themselves.
