Fun With the Braille Code - Intro to Basic Braille
What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will visually learn the letters of the English alphabet (upper and lower case), numbers (0-9), and their name in simulated braille using Unified English Braille (UEB). Class will include a combination of discussion questions about braille, a short video clip about Louis Braille, hands-on activities, and worksheet activities to apply what they have learned. Handouts will be sent prior to class and will need to be printed. No prior braille knowledge is needed. Hands-on Activities: Students will have several options depending on their choice of materials from the supply list. They will get hands on practice reading and writing braille using only six "dots" made into different configurations - or braille shapes. Their simulated braille cell can be an egg carton or a 6 cup muffin pan. Their "dots" can be six small objects of their choice. (Examples: 6 coins, 6 pieces of candy, 6 pom poms, etc.) Another way to make the cells/dots is with a small magnetic dry erase board with markers and/or 6 small magnets. Paper and pencil/crayons work too! Please don't stress about supplies. No need to buy items if you don't already have them around the house.
Learning Goals
By the end of class, students will be able to visually read and write the alphabet (upper and lower case), numbers (0-9), and their name in simulated braille.
