I have been teaching 1st grade for the past 5 years, and this class is perfect for students who know their letter sounds and are starting to learn how to read. Songs and games are fun and engaging activities to help students remember letters, sounds, and words! We'll focus on a couple different word families during each class, and learn how to read decodable CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words through games and songs. Each lesson will have a similar layout: We'll start each lesson by reviewing letter sounds, singing the ABCs, and review what rhyming means. Then we'll talk about our word families of the day and create a list together of all the words we can think of in those word families. We then will move on to a game, which will allow the learners to practice reading the CVC words we're working on that day. After the game, we will be singing a familiar song together, but plugging in some of our CVC words into the song to create a new version that we'll sing together! This class will be LOTS of fun! Lesson 1: -at and -ig word families, Secret CVC Words Game, "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" song Lesson 2: -en and -ot word families, Hidden Eraser Game, "The Wheels on the Bus" song Lesson 3: -ug and -an word families, Google Slides Hide and Seek Game, "Old McDonald" song Lesson 4: -it and -et word families, Marshmallow CVC Word Game, "Bingo" song

Teacher expertise and credentials
Minnesota Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello everyone! I am a former elementary teacher, teaching 5th grade for 2 years and 1st grade for five. I enjoy teaching children about reading and math through games, hands-on learning, and engaging activities. Airplanes, bracelet-making, and social clubs are some of the other topics I am passionate about teaching. Through my time in the classroom, I know that in order for kids to learn, they need to be engaged and having fun! This is why I bring games and activities to all of my classes, so that we can really enjoy our time together.
I still currently hold a K-6 Elementary Teaching License. I loved my time teaching in the classroom but just recently decided it was time for me to stay home with my own two children (ages 3 and 1.5). We are excited for all the adventures we are going to have together as a family, especially going to the zoo to see my favorite animal - giraffes!
