Class Experience

In this one time 30 minute class we will learn about figurative language such as similes, metaphors, hyperbole and personification. I will explain each type and we will practice using examples in sentences. I will discuss the benefits of using some figurative language in creative writing, and also warn of over use. Students will have ample opportunity to think of their own figurative language examples and analyze some of mine. My classes are fun and causal. I actively include each child in the discussion and I run my classes even if only one learner is enrolled. There is no specific experience needed for this class, but students should be strong readers and ready for this advanced grammar concept.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of four types of figurative language and become more comfortable using metaphors, similes, hyperbole and personification in their stories.

I have worked with children ages 3-18 for over 25 years. My experience includes a broad range of skills from pre-reading through university preparation. My specialty is English language learning. I have taught preschool as a lead teacher, and also substituted regularly in elementary and middle school classrooms. Additional experience includes private tutoring for Spanish, reading skills and college essay writing. I also enjoy teaching English as a second language to adults and children. I have worked both in person, and on line, and I am familiar with skills necessary to make both venues successful. I have an undergraduate degree in Engish/Spanish and a graduate degree in communications. I take my teaching seriously, but I try to present the material in a fun way to encourage learners to participate and enjoy learning.
