Beginner Level
This is a class where students will become acquainted with figurative language - what it is, how, when and why it is used. We will identify 5 examples of figurative language- simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia and hyperbole. We will choose one - personification- to work with on today. I will provide the students with a copy of the poem that I will in turn discuss with them. The students will create a short poetic verse, free style, to show their understanding of personification. We will then share the verses with each other. I do not pressure a student to share aloud if he/she is uncomfortable. They may do that after class. * Note* Poetry will be free-verse so that the writing won't feel so restrictive, allowing the students to have fun while becoming comfortable with using figurative language.
