Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 5
This is a fun and engaging private reading session with a certified teacher. To make things more fun and engaging, please message me after enrollment and give me a list of at least five (5) things, interests, and/or hobbies that your learner is interested in and or enjoys. I will use this information to select reading passages for the learner as studies have shown that learners have a better reception to material if they can relate to it.

This tutoring session is an opportunity for your learner to receive one-on-one/individualized attention that may be needed to assist them with achieving their reading goals. The goal for each session is to not only make sure that the learner is not only able to comprehend what they have read, but they should be able to read the material fluently.

Note: This is an ongoing class. Learners can take the class as their schedule permits. Each week's discussion is independent of previous weeks' discussions, so learners my come and go as needed. New material for this course will be added as weeks come.

These sessions are designed to assist the learners with achieving their personal reading goals. The goal for each session is to not only make sure that the learner is not only able to comprehend what they have read, but they should be able to read the material fluently.

How will this session flow?
This session is fun and interactive. Learners will focus on new content each week. (Note: Depending on the learner's progress, we may be able to cover more than one passage during a class period (not typical) or we may not be able to cover a complete passage during a session. Each session is about quality and accuracy, and not quantity.)

The teacher and learner will move through a presentation (shown on the screen) of the passage in a call-response format (echo reading). I will share my screen with the learner and walk them through the passage. Then, I will have learners read the passages to me without any prompting or assistance to check for understanding and mastery of content. I also use questioning while reading to cover key details about the passage.

The reading passage will be made available to the learner no later than 12 hours before the start of class. Printing the passage is always better for the learner, but it is not a requirement.

What words will be covered in each session?

While it is impossible to list every topic for ongoing sessions, here is a list of topics included in the initial plan for the sessions:

Student will read multiple passages from different reading levels in the first session in order for me to assess their reading level. This will help me properly prepare for their subsequent sessions.)

Week 1: Grade Level Passage 1
Week 2: Grade Level Passage 2
Week 3: Grade Level Passage 3
Week 4: Grade Level Passage 4

What will the learner walk away with after each session?

The learner should walk away after each session feeling more confident with the content covered during the session. The learner should also be able to demonstrate a complete understanding of the content covered by being able to correctly read the sentences and/or passages provided without hesitation.

How should the learner prepare for this session?

Learners should come to this session relaxed and ready to have fun. My sessions are no-pressure, but very interactive sessions in a positive learning environment. Learners should also be in a space free from distractions and outside noise. I want to create a nice and relaxing vibe and mood for this class to encourage all participants to be free in their learning and free to move around if they'd like to.

Refund Policy:

I use the Outschool’s refund policy for my classes. You must cancel within the allotted time by Outschool to get a refund for this class. If the system does not automatically initiate a refund for you on your end when you cancel and/or withdraw, then this means that you have canceled outside of the allotted time; and unfortunately no refund or credit will be granted under any circumstances.

Additionally, students must arrive to sessions on time. A session will be canceled without a refund and a future date makeup session will not be scheduled for students that arrive late to class. Students must arrive no later than 10 minutes after the start of class time or the class will be canceled and no refund and/or credit will be granted. Additionally, class/tutoring sessions will not be extended if your learner does not arrive on time for the session. We will cover as much as we possibly can during the allotted time including the time missed for arriving to class late.

Transfer Policy: A transfer request may only be made 48 hours prior to the start of your learner’s scheduled session. Learners may only transfer a registration one time and after this time, all registration dates and times are final. In special circumstances after the first transfer has occurred, you may have the option of transferring to another section. You must enroll in a new section first and you will only be refunded for the originally scheduled section if the originally scheduled section if someone takes your slot in the originally scheduled section. You will only receive a refund after you have attended the newly scheduled section.

No-Show and Late Policy: Refunds and/or transfers will not be given for no-shows and/or being late. Additionally, learners who arrive late will only be tutored for the remaining time left in their section.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a former English & Language Arts (ELA) tutor/teacher assistant for grades K-5 and a current high school teacher. I see so many students that are not where they need to be when it comes to reading in high school. I think a great deal of this comes from not having that strong foundation that is needed in elementary school/younger ages.

I believe that reading is fundamental. I want students to develop a love for reading. Students should read because they love to and want to, not because they have to.

This is why I am passionate about teaching students how to reading because it is important not just in school, but in life period.

My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that one of the main components of being a successful teacher is knowing and understanding that every single student has their own needs and requirements when it comes to learning. There should never be a “one-size fits all” approach when it comes to providing instruction because it just will not work. This is why I love teaching so much. I love teaching because it gives me the opportunity to help others grow in whatever manner they specifically need and that is where my passion truly lies.
