Fun Phonics for First and Second Grade Readers!
In this ongoing class, learners will practice essential phonics skills for becoming independent readers. We will learn them through explicit instruction and then practice using games, short stories, poems and other activities.

Phonics is the relationship between written letters and their sounds. Each reading class will include some study and practice with different phonics skills. Our classes will include a variety of activities that will target these skills, including listening to and reading short stories, songs, and playing games. This class is ideally suited for learners that are in the process of learning how to read. Please look at the listing of topics covered in the weeks below to see if it would be a good fit for your learner. The skills covered can be an introduction for them and also a review of these skills. I look forward to working with your learners and strengthening their reading confidence and abilities! Week 1 (July 12): Silent/Magic e Week 2 (July 19): Consonant digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh, ph) Week 3 (July 26): long a vowel patterns Week 4 (August 2): long e vowel patterns Week 5 (August 9): long i vowel patterns Week 6 (August 16): long o vowel patterns Week 7 (August 23): long u vowel patterns

Hello! My name is Sarah King. I love teaching kids to read and helping them read to learn! I enjoy teaching anything that is reading related, including the areas of comprehension, phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling and vocabulary. I also like teaching writing and social studies. On Outschool, I mostly do individual reading tutoring and I enjoy it so much! I enjoy getting to know my learners and helping them to grow as readers, as well as increasing their confidence and interest in reading. I also have a couple second grade reading and math camps that are fun to teach, as well as a few other interest-based summer camps. I appreciate Outschool because this platform has helped me with making connections with so many wonderful children and families from all over the United States, as well as other countries around the world!
I have been an elementary teacher for 22 years. I was a second-grade teacher for 17 years and currently I am a fifth-grade teacher. My experience includes teaching all subjects, but I am now a departmentalized teacher and teach reading and writing. I also have experience teaching online ESL (English as a Second Language). I have my master's degree in education and I am a certified K-8 teacher in the state of Maine.
I love learning and passing on this love of learning to my students. Learning is best when it is interactive, fun and engaging. I believe I am a patient, encouraging and especially an enthusiastic teacher. I love smiling and laughing with my students!
