US Grade 1
A small class meeting twice a week. Learn first grade math skills: addition, subtraction and basic math confidence. Class is very interactive. Students are asked to bring a whiteboard for writing problems down. You are welcome to join this class at any time. I want to make your child feel confident and happy doing math. Schedule: Feb 13 & 14: Banana cutting project to learn about fractions. February 28th & 29th: reviewing adding and subtracting for speed. Tricks for counting up and down. March 7: adding and subtracting below 10. Writing 1-20. Counting backwards. March 14: Learn to add pairs 1+1 2+2 etc. Learn even/odd. Money activity. March 21: adding and subtracting over 10. Stacking addition. Understanding ones/tens/hundreds place. Writing equations. March 28th: Practice counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. Practice adding 10 easily. April 4th: clocks and time. Practice subtracting 10 quickly. April 11th" Stacked subtraction and borrowing. Because of my background in Montessori hands-on learning, I encourage my students to draw or write the math equations along with the teacher. We use dice, coins and sometimes bananas to "see" the math. We play a dice game for interaction and to build their confidence in numbers. I will encourage your child to call out answers if they know. Small classes means we can stay unmuted most of the time in class. (Please make sure your child is in a quiet environment if possible) Worksheets are sent home after every class meeting for at-home practice tying into the lesson. See you in the classroom!
