What's included

36 live meetings
27 in-class hours
Homework
2-4 hours per week. Students are expected to practice 25 minutes daily. In the very beginning, it is likely they will only need 5-10 minutes per day. After the first month or two they will need to practice more in order to build the muscle memory necessary to play the flute.

Class Experience

Beginner Level
We use Kathy Blocki’s Flute Method Book 1 to learn the flute. This series focuses on creating a great tone on the flute and flexibility to play in octaves, delaying more complex rhythms (when compared to other series) in favor of this foundation. Each song has an online track that students can use to help them hear the music and learn it.

We play games that reinforce musical concepts. Students can expect to learn note reading, rhythms, as well as sound production on a flute.

Because of the nature of this class, content continually builds. Try to commit to the whole year to really give your child a chance to learn the flute.

Practicing daily is vital to learning the flute. In the first few weeks, it may only be 5 minutes a day. After a few months, students should expect to practice 25 minutes per day. Class alone does not build the muscle memory needed to learn an instrument. I recommend building it into your routine so that students get into the habit of playing every day.

It is important to note that students of this age range are rarely able to manage their own schedules. They need YOU to remind them to practice :)

The syllabus is a rough outline, but due to the nature of learning an instrument, we may move faster or slower based on student need.

If you have siblings and one is just a little younger than 11 and you want them in the same class together, you can enroll both of them here. Otherwise, I recommend younger students to enroll in the Fun First Flute Class (Ages 6-10).
Learning Goals
Students learn proper posture and tone production on the flute. A musical foundation is laid with note reading and rhythm counting.

Supply List
Flute (reach out to me directly for help making a selection)
Blocki Flute Method Book 1 (not flute Zoo)
Pneumo Pro
Music Stand
Pencils
Laptop instead of mobile device for zoom meetings. This is because the Zoom mobile app lacks certain sound settings and often filters out the flute entirely. That's a problem for a flute class.
