Pointillism is a technique that uses dots to create value. For this technique, you will want to felt tipped pen, Ideally black. Smaller tiped pens will likely result in better looking artwork.

Pattern shading
Pattern shading uses repeated pattern to create texture and value. Patterns are usually shapes, colours, or lines repeated over and over again in the same way.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Contour shading
Contour, shading uses lines (like hatching and crosshatching) create values The distinction for contour shading is that the lines follow the form of the object. You’ll want to imagine your object as a three-dimensional shape. For this reason, it’s best to use a still life to draw from when you are first learning.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Graphite smudge shading
Smudge shading is a quick shading method that’s good to use for gestural artwork. I prefer circle shading for realism, but smudge shading definitely has its placed.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Final project. Graphic landscape.
This week we will work on our final project. Your final project should combine at least 3 of the different shading techniques covered in the previous 7 weeks to create an image. My example drawing will be a graphic landscape.

Homework
Frequency: included
Feedback: included
Details: Every week I will expect learners to demonstrate the shading technique I cover in class. I advise that learners keep a sketchbook so that all of their learning is in one place. Certain techniques will require more time than others, so homework will vary. Some weeks it may take two hours another weeks it may take half an hour.
Assessment
Frequency: included
Details: I do not like to assign grades to art because it can be so personal. I will provide detailed feedback based on photos the learners send me. If learners do not send me photos of their art I will not be able to provide helpful feedback.
Sketchbook!
Pencils (4B/6B, 2B, HB, 2H are ideal)
Eraser
Fine tipped black felt pens (I use Micron Pens 01, 03, 05, 08 and Graphic 1)

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
