Unit 1Understanding the Place Value System
6 lessons3 Weeks
Understanding the Place Value System
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Understand place value
Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
Lesson 2
Number forms
Use place value understanding to read and write whole numbers in three forms: standard, expanded, and word.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Use place value to read and write decimals
Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
Lesson 4
Use place value to read and write decimals
Use place value understanding to read and write decimals to thousandths.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Compare, order, and round whole numbers
Use place value understanding to compare, order, and round whole numbers to any place.
Lesson 6
Compare, order, and round decimals
Use place value understanding to compare, order, and round decimals to any place.
Unit 2Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredth
10 lessons5 Weeks
Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredth
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Add and subtract whole numbers
Add and subtract whole numbers using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Lesson 8
Add and subtract decimals
Add and subtract decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
 Week 5
Lesson 9
Multiply whole numbers
Fluently multiply whole numbers using mental math and properties of multiplication.
Lesson 10
Multiply whole numbers
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm and other multiplication strategies.
 Week 6
Lesson 11
Divide whole numbers
Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers using special quotient strategies and fact families.
Lesson 12
Divide whole numbers
Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
 Week 7
Lesson 13
Multiply decimals
Multiply decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Lesson 14
Multiply decimals
Multiply decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
 Week 8
Lesson 15
Divide decimals
Divide decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Lesson 16
Divide decimals
Divide decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Unit 3Operations and Algebraic Thinking
4 lessons2 Weeks
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
 Week 9
Lesson 17
Order of Operations
Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
Lesson 18
Interpret numerical expressions
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them.
 Week 10
Lesson 19
Understand expressions
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them.
Lesson 20
Calculate expressions
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers. Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
Unit 4Number and Operations-Fractions
12 lessons6 Weeks
Number and Operations-Fractions
 Week 11
Lesson 21
Factors
Find the factors of a number using divisibility rules and identify the Greatest Common Factor of two numbers.
Lesson 22
Multiples
Use number sense to find the multiples of a number and identify the Least Common Multiple of two numbers.
 Week 12
Lesson 23
Understand fractions
Use models and real-world scenarios to interpret, write, and model fractions.
Lesson 24
Simplify fractions
Use divisibility rules to reduce fractions to their simplest form.
 Week 13
Lesson 25
Convert fractions
Convert fractions to and from mixed numbers, improper form, and decimals.
Lesson 26
Add and subtract fractions
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators.
 Week 14
Lesson 27
Multiply fractions
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
Lesson 28
Divide fractions
Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/b = a ÷ b). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.
 Week 15
Lesson 29
Add and subtract mixed numbers
Add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators by replacing given fractions with equivalent mixed numbers in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of mixed numbers with like denominators.
Lesson 30
Multiply & divide mixed numbers
Solve real-world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.
 Week 16
Lesson 31
Compare & order fractions
Compare and order fractions using one of the three methods: Convert to decimals, find the common denominators, or cross multiply.
Lesson 32
Fractions application
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers.
Students will learn to understand the place value system. Students will also perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths. Students will write and interpret numerical expressions. Students will analyze patterns and relationships. Students will use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. Students will apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.
I am a certified math teacher with experience teaching this grade and subject in the classroom.
Homework Offered
I will provide 5-10 voluntary example problems for homework after each lesson. If a student is struggling, they can post their concerns on the classroom wall or message me privately for more clarification. Homework should not take more than 15 minutes per lesson.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I will assess students based on their submitted lesson practice and homework (if they do their homework). Students will also have occasional quizzes. I will also provide a grade book and progress report at the end of the course.
Grades Offered
Students need to have taken 4th grade math or been tested on a 5th grade level. We will review 4th grade concepts to build on.
No textbooks or paid materials will be required. Everything will be provided. Interactive programs such as Nearpod and Desmos will be used, but these are free.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
I use multiple platforms to make my lessons as interactive and engaging as possible. The interactive part of the lesson will usually be on Nearpod, but occasionally, Desmos or Classkick will also be used. Nearpod and Classkick do not require an account, while Desmos requires a free account. The optional homework and quizzes will be on Google Forms, which students will not need an account for. There will also occasionally be extra resources available to students through Khan Academy or IXL.
