From Letters to Words (Level 1) - Systematic Phonics Instruction (Small Class)
What's included
10 live meetings
5 in-class hoursClass Experience
Learn how to read through fun interactive activities and games! Children learn more and master skills faster when they are having fun. In this class, the hunt is on! Each learning activity earns a peak into a special mystery tin. All of the tins have a little surprise, but some of the tins have a gem. The students must work together to collect 5 gems throughout class. Once the 5th gem is found, the gems can be exchanged for a mystery surprise. This class is not merely exposure to phonics - your child will follow a systematic progression of learning. In each class, a new sound will be learned. As your child learns and masters each sound, they will also learn the skills necessary to blend the sounds together to make words! Week 1: Sounds - U, P Word - UP Week 2: Sounds - C, A Words - CUP, PUP, CAP Week 3: Sounds - T & the Words - AT, PAT, CAT, TAP, CUT Week 4: Sounds - H, O Words - HAT, HOT, HOP, TOP, POP, POT, COT, COP Week 5: Sounds - G, B Words - HUG, GOT, TAG, TUG, HOG, GAG, GAP, BAG, BAT, BUG, TUB, CUB, CAB, COB, BOB, BUT In the first week only two sounds are learned. This will allow your child to feel confident in their abilities, and also feel comfortable interacting in the class environment. In week two, two more sounds are added and your child will begin blending sounds and reading words. In week three, the class really takes off with the addition of one more sound, and the sight word "the." By the end of our 10 sessions together, your child will have had practice sounding out 33 different words (as well as some nonsense words), and will have the underlying skills in place that build a strong foundation for future reading success! Is this the right class for my child? 1) A child with no prior exposure to letters or their sounds can take this class. 2) A child that has had some exposure to letters and their sounds, but does not have automatic recognition of all letter sounds can take this class. 3) A child that knows that majority of the basic sounds that letters make, but has not had practice blending those sounds to make words can take this class. 4) Finally, a child that has had some practice with blending, but struggles to do so, or "guesses" what the word is some or most of the time will likely still benefit from taking this class. *** If you are still unsure if this class is the right fit for your child, please message me and I can help you decide if this class sounds like the correct placement for your child. Please Note: 1) Your child is the one taking this class. However, some assistance may be necessary from time to time - especially for the first session or two. I do ask that you or another helper be available to assist your child from time to time. 2) There will be activities that need to be worked on outside of class time. The activities should be easy and fun, but are necessary to help your child master each week's skills. You or another helper will need to assist your child for 10 minutes, 4-5 times a week. *If your child participated in my trial version of this class, please note that the first class in our 10 sessions together will be somewhat similar.
Learning Goals
Master the sounds U, P, C, A, T, H, O, G, and B, and learn to read (NOT memorize!) CVC words that use those letters.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I discovered that I had a passion for teaching 15 years ago. It was at that time that I taught my oldest daughter, then 4, to read. I loved it! I have dedicated the past 14 years of my life to all things reading - researching, working with professionals, and tutoring. I have gone on to tutor several children one on one, and in small group class settings. I have helped many children learn to read, and have fun while doing it.
I believe, and have seen first hand, that children learn best when they are happy, engaged, and having fun! My goal is to put a smile on your child's face, and perhaps even get a laugh or two. When your child feels good, they can and will learn many things.
