Since starting to offer classes on Outschool designed to help students connect with others in an online setting, I've heard from parents who would like to have an opportunity for their elementary aged students to interact with others who aren't interested in talking about video games. This class is a response to that interest. This isn't to say that students who play video games aren't invited to participate. It's simply that when this class convenes, I'll be helping students focus their conversations on other things. I'll begin the class by working to set a tone of warmth and friendliness for the students, explaining that their verbal participation will be by invitation. So much success can be built when students are allowed to decide if and when they will speak. In my classes, I offer gentle encouragement and usually have success. That said, I do stress that I need to know when they are turning down an invitation which can be done non-verbally by shaking their heads. On that note, I'll explain nonverbal communication and its important role for me, as a teacher, in a Zoom room. From there, I'll invite the students to begin talking about themselves. We'll likely talk about pets, games, and favorite foods. Assuming the conversation blossoms, I'll invite others to ask a question or make a comment about what a student has shared, thus encouraging interaction and social success. My hope is for this experience to be engaging and enjoyable for the students and that they exit the class feeling good for having participated. If parents request it, I'll provide feedback from my perspective about their child's participation within 24 hours of the conclusion of the class. While the conversation in this class is English, it is also ESL friendly, appropriate for CEFR: A2, B1, B2, and beyond. Having learners from different countries and backgrounds helps expand our opportunities to connect with and respect others. ----- A NOTE ABOUT THE COST OF THIS CLASS: I know the price of my classes is higher than many others on Outschool. As an experienced and talented educator, I believe I'm worth this amount and invite you to look at my reviews. That said, I don't want any family to be priced out of what I offer. Whatever your financial situation, if you're interested in one or more of my classes, please reach out and let me know what you can afford. I can provide coupons, refunds, and/or reductions, and am confident we can find an equitable rate that works for you and me.
