In this self-paced course, students will learn comprehension strategies including visualizing, making inferences, asking questions, recognizing and thinking about elements of fiction, using text evidence to support a readers thinking about a text, and theme. I will be reading the book aloud to students. Students are expected to follow along and record their thinking using a Google Form for each of the 8 sections. This allows your student to focus on comprehension.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to monitor their thinking during reading while using strategies to comprehend text. Strategies include visualizing, inferring, and asking questions.

Parental Guidance
Freak the Mighty is recommended for readers 10 and older. It is a powerful story about two outcast boys who are often treated poorly but develop a friendship. One main character, Max, lives with his grandparents because his father was put in jail for killing his mother. The other main character (Kevin but referred to as Freak) has Morquio Syndrome, a genetic condition that affects his physical abilities.
The book deals with issues such as physical and learning disabilities using humor and kindness. There are refences to cigarettes and drinking.
