Fractions For Beginners

Hello Parents! This course will cover an introduction the the world of fractions, best suited for ages 10-14. These lessons will cover what fractions are, how to add and subtract fractions, simplifying fractions, and multiplying fractions.

US Grade 4 - 5
Beginner Level
This class will cover an introduction to fractions! Over 5 lessons students will learn what fractions are and where they exist in the real world, how to add/subtract fractions, how to use fractions as mixed numbers, how to simplify fractions, and how to multiply fractions. This course will be broken into 5 lessons all under thirty minutes long. The lessons will be provided asynchronously for students to work at their own pace. Homework will be provided at the end of each lesson and taken up at the beginning of the next, except for the  final lesson

Lesson 1:
What are Fractions
 Lets begin discussing what fractions are 
11 mins of video lessons
Lesson 2:
Adding and subtraction fractions
 Lets learn about adding and subtractions fractions that have common denominators 
8 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
Adding and subtractions fractions 2
 Lets learn how to add and subtract fractions that do not have common denominators 
8 mins of video lessons
Lesson 4:
Converting fractions to mixed numbers and simplifying fractions
 Lets learn how to convert fractions to mixed numbers and simplify fractions to the lowest common denominator 

Other Details

Pre-Requisites
Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills are required.
Supply List
Students will need a blank piece of paper and something to write with.
If the student requires it, manipulatives to aid in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing can be used.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello, I am Mr Cullen,
I am passionate about teaching mathematics and science!
I am in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers and hold a Bachelors of Education for the Primary and Junior Divisions from Ontario Tech University.
I believe in student centered learning, each student has a different set of strengths/needs. My goal is to find these and deliver lessons that fit the goals and skills of my students.
I am also a strong believer in being a forever learner, I do not know everything about teaching and will not pretend that I do. I am always open to new teaching practices and trying different strategies for my students.
I am excited to be working with Outschool, something you might like to know about me is that I am very passionate about the outdoors and athletics!
