Fraction Fun: An Introduction to Fractions

Fraction Fun is all about an introduction to fractions for your student. As an eight year teacher of education, I have witnessed fractions being a struggle and intimidating for many. My goal is to make fractions feel less overwhelming for students. The foundation of fractions and understanding the concept and how we use them in daily life is essential to being successful when using fractions. Each grade level builds on the basic skill of fractions. Students must understand what a fraction is in order to later be able to order, add, subtract, multiply, and divide with like and unlike denominators. Fractions may also appear in word problems for your students, making it more challenging to sort through the information. Again, having a solid foundation of fractions will assist in future skills. It is essential to lay the foundation in order to build on the skill with ease.

Introduction of fractions will be geared towards students who need a solid concept of what a fraction is and why they are significant. This lesson will include identifying, modeling, and creating fractions. It will teach the mindset of future skills coming into play, such as, ordering fractions, adding/subtracting fractions, and multiplying/dividing fractions.

The lesson will be taught through interactive slides. Instruction will be differentiated in order to meet the needs of all students. A typical lesson will always start with a goal of what the student will be able to do at the end of the lesson and how they know they have an understanding. A learning intention will be discussed in order to give students a clear idea of what they should have an understanding of after the lesson. This will assist with generating questions and help me, as the teacher, know what areas still need focus. After the learning intention is discussed, I will have students see if they already know anything about fractions (prior knowledge). We will discuss as a group, independently, and work together. I show students how to do a skill (I do), we do it together (we do), and they try independently (you do). Students will be able to work with each other if they choose and one-on-one with me. We will discuss as a group, with other students, and practice independently.

This is a slow paced class geared towards upper elementary (3-5) and 6th grade students. The idea is to have a solid grasp of basic fractions in order to be able to add, subtract, order, multiply and divide fractions with like and unlike denominators in future lessons. This particular lesson is slow paced and a great foundation builder for future fraction skills.

If students are late to enroll and need to be brought up to speed, we will briefly review as a whole group. I also save all notes and will be able to send notes through email as necessary.
There will also be time set aside for one-on-one time in order for students to privately or as a whole group ask questions.

I hope you join this class in order to get your student on the right path for having fun with fractions!

Learning Needs
The learning in this class will be differentiated in order to meet the needs of each student. I will allow for one-on-one time and provide alternative ways to problem solve.
Parental Guidance
CLASSKICK Classkick is a platform that will be used allowing students to interactively follow along with the teacher. It allows for students to type notes, write, create, access links, and much more. The platform easily allows the teacher to monitor each students work and can enter their screen to provide help. Students do not need to sign up for classkick, as a link and access code will be provided for easy log in. This will provide students with slides they can go back to in the future as needed. KAHOOT The lesson will also include a short Kahoot game. The student will not need to sign up for Kahoot as a game code will be provided in the lesson.
