Homework
I will provide 5-10 example problems for homework after each class. This is voluntary. If a student is struggling, they can also post their concerns on the classroom wall for more clarification or message me privately. Homework should not take more than 15 minutes per assignment.
Assessment
I will provide optional quizzes, as well as an optional test at the end of the course to assess whether the student is ready for the next grade.

Class Experience

US Grade 4
This class is interactive, where I will break concepts down and check for understanding throughout the class. I scaffold and adjust my pacing to suit the needs of the students. I will use visuals, mnemonics, real-world examples, discussion, and guided notes, to ensure a deep understanding. Student participation is expected. I strive to make learning fun and instill confidence in the student.

Each class will begin with a 5-minute breakdown of the previous class’s homework. This is to make sure that everyone retained the lesson and can complete the assignment without help. I use the “I do, We do, You do” model to encourage retention and build confidence. After teaching a concept, I will explain a real-world example, guide the students in solving a problem, and then let them solve one independently to ensure they understand the concept.

This is not intended to teach a full grade level for the first time; this is a review course to enhance the student’s math skills. We will review all foundational math learned in 4th grade to give the student a strong start to 5th grade math. This is also great for students who are currently in 5th grade, but could use a refresher on the foundational math. Students should have completed 4th grade, be in 4th grade, or be planning to skip 4th grade math. We will have class 2 times a week. The following is our tentative schedule:

Week 1 (Date TBD): Understand place value relationships. Read and write decimals.
Week 2 (Date TBD): Round, compare, and order whole numbers & decimals.
Week 3 (Date TBD): Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers & decimals. Word problems
Week 4 (Date TBD): Multiply up to 4 digit numbers by 1 digit, and two two-digit numbers
Week 5 (Date TBD): Divide up to 4 digit dividend by 1 digit divisor (with remainders).
Week 6 (Date TBD): Recognize and generate equivalent fractions. Simplify fractions.
Week 7 (Date TBD): Convert fractions. Add & subtract fractions and mixed numbers.
Week 8 (Date TBD): Multiply fractions and mixed numbers. Mixed fraction word problems.
Week 9 (Date TBD): Angles & lines
Week 10 (Date TBD): Polygons
Week 11 (Date TBD): Measurement, area, and perimeter.

My classroom is a safe, supportive environment where students learn communication, social, and problem-solving skills. Every child can succeed with guidance and encouragement.

I am passionate about math. I know a lot of tricks and mnemonics to make math fun and easier to understand. I especially love helping struggling students achieve success. I have been a math teacher and tutor in public school and online since 2010.

I am passionate about creative writing. There are so many ways to express what is in your heart through words, and I would love to help you find that passion as well. I have two years of classroom experience teaching English and writing in public school. I also have had twenty-five books published. Many of them have been translated and narrated. Let me help you bring out your creativity in a way that will astound your audience.

I am also passionate about science and nature. From the expanse of outer space to the deepest depths of the ocean, from the first organisms to grace our planet to the future of technology, let’s explore the universe’s many incredible wonders. I have two years of classroom experience teaching science and robotics in public school.

*I am going on maternity leave mid-late October.
