Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This course is designed to introduce learners to the foundational topics of classical physics. Each week we will look at a different group of fundamental concepts in physics. We will first explore the concepts abstractly and then look at real life examples of each one.

The course is designed to give learners an understanding of the phenomena they see around them everyday, and provide a conceptual foundation to build on if they choose to continue studying physics on a deeper level.

There is no math prerequisite. While we will sometimes look at simple equations, learners do not need any experience in algebra or calculus.

Each lesson we will examine examples of specific elements and explore questions such as, but not limited to:

- What kinds of motion are there?
- What is conservation and why is it important?
- How are light and sound different from each other?
- What are some real life examples of Newton’s Law of Motion in action?
- What is electricity?

Final Project:
Students will complete a final project on a physical phenomenon related of their choice. They have creative options on how to complete the project and will collaborate with the instructor to determine what format works best for their learning style. Students will share their project with their classmates in the final meeting, respond to questions and comments, and ask questions about their classmates’ projects.

This is a highly interactive course. Students will learn through an image and video filled presentation and discussion. Students’ participation and questions are regularly encouraged. Classes are designed to encourage student engagement and follow their curiosity.

Hello! My name is Arwen, and I am absolutely passionate about space science, the environment, and teaching! I offer courses about the solar system, planets, natural processes, soil, and the environment. I am a NASA Solar System Ambassador and science author. My Master's is in Space Science, and I have undergraduate degrees in Agricultural Ecology, and Natural Resource Management. I am currently working on a doctorate in STEM education.

I believe curiosity and learning are human instincts. I try to honor that by asking the learners lots of questions and encouraging them to think about information in new ways.

When not teaching, you can find me hosting "Found in Space: A Science Podcast for Kids and Teens" or playing Dungeons and Dragons and exploring the Southwest with my three homeschooled kiddos and our big, fluffy orange cat named Moose!

I like to keep class sizes small so each learner can get individualized and full attention. Please feel free to reach out.
