Class Experience

In this highly interactive reading course learners will learn strategies to improve or enhance their foundational reading skills. This course will engage learners by using a large amount of visual anchor charts along with teacher modeling and peer discussion. Digital slides, high frequency word flash cards, and videos will be used to meet a variety of learning modalities. I believe in meeting learners at their current academic level and providing an encouraging learning environment to facilitate meaningful learning. Learners should come to class with paper and pencil or whiteboard.

Areas of focus:
Phonics- CVC and CVCE words, vowel teams, word parts, soft and hard C and G, blends, digraphs and trigraphs.
Phonemic awareness- Manipulating beginning, middle and ending phonemes, rhyming, and syllable work.
Accuracy- Strategies to improve accuracy and self monitoring while reading.
Fluency- Strategies to improve fluency. (examples: scooping, high frequency word practice)
Comprehension- Strategies to improve comprehension (examples: stop and jot, ask questions while you read...)
