Class Experience

In this one time, hands-on class, students will learn how to create a forced perspective optical illusion using manipulation of camera distortion. Students will learn the theory of it and why/how it works and then they will set up a display using ordinary objects from home (toys work really well!) so they can be able to apply this technique in the real world to create fun, mind-bending art! Some examples of real-world forced perspective scenes are: balancing the moon on the tip of your finger, "stepping" on your friends, fitting an entire car into your mouth, and more!

Class will begin with a short presentation on how the camera works and why the lens causes this optical illusion. Then students will set up a scene at home, with the help of the teacher, and create their own forced perspective. Students will then share their photos on the classroom wall. Students will be encouraged to use this skill in the real world and upload photos to the classroom for sharing.

*Interested in one of my classes but don't see a time that fits your schedule? Please ask! I'm willing to work with you to set up a time that works for you!

Supply List
Students will need a digital camera to complete this course. It does not have to be anything fancy or high-tech. As long as it takes pictures, it's fine!

Also, find a couple of objects to create a forced perspective photo scene. Some examples could be toy dinosaurs, dolls, brick people, toy cars, flowers, etc.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I've been a teacher in a traditional classroom since 2002. During that time, I have experience with pre-K through 8th grade. To further my interest in photography, I completed the New York Institute of Photography courses and received my certificate of completion in 2006. I've also completed several online training to strengthen my skills. I have photographed weddings, real estate, and portraits professionally but I absolutely love photographing nature and macro shots!
