Class Experience

Haiti is a country not far from the United States with a long history and rich culture that celebrates its West African roots. Its folktales reflect both its African heritage and its position as one of the oldest independent countries in the Americas. In this one-time live online class, I introduce young learners to the Haitian folktale of Tipingee, a bright and clever girl not unlike themselves. A mysterious man approaches Tipingee's mother with an offer to help with the family's many chores. And the only payment he wants is... Tipingee! How will she get out of this deal? Fortunately, she's clever, and has many friends to help.

As I tell this tale, my friend Sam will join us. Sam is a shy but curious cat who magically morphs between puppet and digital forms. Fair warning: Sam has a habit of showing up in the story!

Teacher expertise and credentials
[Pronouns: they/he] My goal as an educator is to inspire curiosity, compassion, and creativity in the next generation of global citizens. I have 20 years of experience in various educational settings, including a daycare, two children's museums, a storyteller's stage, two university tutoring centers, and online as a teacher of English as a second language. I hold a BA in creative writing with a minor in studio arts from Metropolitan State University (St. Paul).

I offer classes that embody my passions: travel, storytelling, history, literature, science, art, and early-childhood education. My teaching style is marked by patience, gentleness, and humor—less Elmo, more Mister Rogers. I believe it is essential for children to learn the importance of asking "why." My greatest asset as a teacher is adapting quickly to the needs and skills of my students.

Beyond teaching, i am a published essayist and poet. I currently reside in Minneapolis. My interests include linguistics, travel, volunteering, heraldry, graphic design, video games, and caring for my pet lovebird, Buddy.
