Class Experience

Each student will fold and weave a two- or three-dimensional star using strips of paper. The teacher will take the class through the process step by step. As we fold, we'll weave in a bit of Western European geography, highlighting the Germanic countries which have the tradition of making Froebel stars at Christmas time. Students will discover some little-known education history about a very well-known part of the school system when they learn how Friedrich Froebel's name came to be associated with the star. Folding the stars gives students hands-on geometry experience with parallel and perpendicular lines, squares, triangles, and rectangles, and 45, 90, and 180 degree angles. We'll even throw in a few animals along the way. We'll finish with a live virtual gallery of all the students' creations.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a new Outschool teacher, and, for starters, I'm busily constructing classes on English grammar, Shakespeare, planets, constellations, folk art, and second language learning. When I complete those, I'll diversify. My BA is in Spanish and Creative Writing, and my MA is in Linguistics. I've taught in three different countries and three different languages. I can't imagine ever getting tired of meeting new people or learning about new languages and cultures. I prefer mentoring to teaching because I believe that people learn best when they don't stop at hearing about something new, but get right on with doing it. As an ESL teacher, my classes aren't at all as chaotic as they may look because I have structured every activity to make sure students are doing English--interacting, speaking, moving, laughing, and forgetting to be nervous about using a new language. I've lived in five countries, speak three languages with varying degrees of mastery, and share my home with one husband, two dogs, and an unofficially adopted PhD student. Three grown children round out the family and you can catch us on our monthly get-togethers playing games, watching movies, and laughing a lot.
