High School Photography 4: Photography as Art and Career is an 18-week course focused on preparing students for a professional career in photography. This course will guide learners through building a polished portfolio, developing a personal brand, and understanding the business aspects of photography. From working with clients to creating a business plan, students will gain the skills necessary to launch their own photography career or further their studies in photography at the collegiate level. The final project will include a professional portfolio, website, and business plan, which can be used beyond high school.

Throughout the course, students will explore the many career paths in photography, from commercial photography to fine art and photojournalism. They will receive guidance in selecting their best work, organizing it into a professional portfolio, and developing a cohesive theme that reflects their unique photographic style.

A significant portion of the course will cover the business side of photography. Students will learn how to communicate with clients, manage expectations, handle feedback, and navigate legal considerations such as contracts and copyrights. Additionally, learners will study marketing and branding strategies, including how to create an online presence through social media and personal websites.

Hands-on activities will involve creating mood boards, image lists, and developing business plans, all of which culminate in real-world knowledge applicable to launching a photography business. The course also includes portfolio critiques and reviews to help students refine their work and prepare for professional opportunities.

This course is part of the Focus Academy series offering a complete and comprehensive photography curriculum for all grade levels, Kindergarten through 12th grade. All of these courses meet grade-level academic standards for photography and integrate other art, English, math, science, and social studies skills. Learners can begin at any grade level or take the courses in sequence.
