Flute Entry Level - Novice Ages 6-8

Learn flute performance skills in a personalized learning experience. From set up to proper posture and hold, to playing your first notes and melodies, this class will prepare you to perform novice skills developing comfort and confidence.

1-2 hours per week. Where you focus, you win. When you attend your lessons, be prepared with questions and to demonstrate your earned skills over the week from the suggested practice exercises.
Assessment
The teacher will offer in the moment assessment, guidance, and suggestions for improvement. There is no one approach to the flute and you may hear the same content between teachers, just said differently. Ultimately, our learners choose and we will guide.

All activities in this program are designed to meet the National Standards for Music Education criteria, ensuring a high-quality and comprehensive learning experience that focuses on performing and responding to music. 

CHARACTERISTICS OF NOVICE CLASSES
- instrument performance basics: posture, holding the instrument, producing a sound, finding the notes on the slide
- breathing for the flute
- embrochure formation
- articulation, tonguing, attacks
- combining skills: playing legato and playing staccato
- technical fingering and learning the notes
- reading music like a flute player: treble clef and rhythms
- performing a variety of music examples that deliberately develop master skills for application to learner-preferred music
- active listening and ear training
- specific goal development (audition and competition preparation)


Activities can be designed to support performance goals for:
- auditions
- performance competitions
- test and exams (in school, ensembles, ABRSM, ISOM)

METHOD OF DELIVERY & SAMPLE LESSON
Flute private study in this class can be delivered with the following options in mind:
 Method 1: trial lesson for fit assessment and go forward planning

Method 2 involves specific, defined lessons that are tailored to achieve a particular outcome. These lessons are often time-sensitive and are designed to gather the audience's perspective, ensuring a focused and effective learning experience.

Method 3: Continuous specialized study to meet long-term goals

Delivery methods are tailored to the goals of the learner. Collaborative and mutually agreed upon development pathways will be shared after the 1st meeting. Lessons will typically include:

1) personalized 1-on-1 conversation between learner & teacher
2) skill assessment for playing techniques
3) establish goals and expectations of success
4) repertoire needs 
5) how to take our flute session conversation to independent focus time
6) deliberate practice or performance activities

All learners will receive a guided plan to execute against their goals. The plan will be collaborative and act as a working document that is revisited often.

The learner can expect to be active and play their instrument for most of the booked time for all lessons.

TEACHER SUPPORT - ALL ACCESS via VIDEO
The teacher will deliver recommendations and guidance during meeting sessions. Assignments and deliberate practice homework are offered that align specifically with learner goals. Learners are highly encouraged to send videos throughout the week of their practicing, performances, and questions. The teacher will provide video or written response guidance for continued support outside session times.
