This class will be based on Kate DiCamillo's 2014 Newbery Medal book, Flora and Ulysses. All reading will be done outside of class to allow for class time to be a time of discussion about the pages read. The book begins when a crazy, out of control vacuum is turned on and begins sucking up pants, cereal, and even a squirrel. But this unexpected event just so happens to have a twist. Running out to help the squirrel, the young Flora Belle Buckman (a dedicated comic book reader) finds a superhero of sorts as the squirrel now has superpowers. Could it be? Is it true? No one could have seen this change coming. The squirrel has super strength, is able to fly, and can do so much more. Come join me as we continue the mighty adventures of Flora and the newly reborn, Ulysses. Students will be asked to read approximately 14 short chapters per week as homework, and then engage in a classroom discussion over those chapters the following session. To aid also in the engagement, students will play classroom games, be given word puzzles, and for a final project will be asked to construct a diorama showing a favorite part from the book. I hope to see your student (and maybe a squirrel or two) in class!

Teacher expertise and credentials
With 4 children, ranging from 10 - 18, I have read most of the same books as my children. I have picked their brains, discussed the books, characters, and plots with them, and pinned the books I think others would enjoy as well. Now I want to spend my time sharing these books with your student. While my all-time favorite series will forever be the Chronicles of Narnia, (still waiting for my closet to open to a land beyond clothes), I fully enjoy watching the imagination of a child's mind open. I would love to take your child on a journey through this book.
Additionally, I am working on a 2nd Master in Teaching with the desire to be a Middle School English Teacher once the degree is completed this fall.
