Students will practice building words by adding prefixes and suffixes to a base. We will consider meaning, usage, spelling and pronunciation changes as we build words. Learning morphology helps develop reading, spelling and vocabulary.

3 lessons//3 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1IntroductionIn the first lesson, I will explain and demonstrate how to use a matrix to build words around a single base word by adding various prefixes and suffixes. In the video, I'll also talk about what kinds of spelling changes you might need to watch out for as you add suffixes, and about how words can change as we add prefixes and suffixes to a base. A simple matrix will be posted that your learner can use to get started trying to build some words.Week 2Lesson 2Free BasesThis lesson will give learners five "free" bases to build words from and to practice applying the spelling changes that can happen when adding a suffix to a base, with a particular focus on dropping a single, silent e and changing a y to an i.Week 3Lesson 3Bound BasesIn this lesson, learners will get five "bound" bases to build words from. We'll again think about spelling changes that may happen when adding a suffix, in particular when to double a final consonant.
I have had extensive professional development in the ideas presented in this class, and have seven years of experience teaching this content in a classroom setting.
Homework Offered
Students will work independently to build words from each matrix. They will only need paper and pencil to complete their work, or they can complete it digitally on something like a Google Doc if they prefer. I will always give feedback on any work that is posted and am happy to answer questions if they have them.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
