Internet Safety: Protecting Yourself from Scams, Frauds, and Deception This 8-week class is designed to teach individuals how to protect themselves from scams, frauds, and deception while using the internet. The class will cover a wide range of topics, including how to identify different types of internet scams, how to protect personal information online, and how to use the internet safely and securely. Through interactive activities, group discussions, and in-class exercises, students will have the opportunity to learn how to identify and avoid internet scams, how to safeguard personal information online and how to use the internet responsibly. Here is a summary of the topics and objectives for each session: Session 1: "Scams Targeting Young People: How to Recognize and Avoid Online Frauds" - Understanding how scammers target young people through the internet, how to recognize and avoid different types of online scams, and the importance of being cautious and skeptical when dealing with unknown individuals or organizations online. Session 2: "Scholarships and Financial Aid: Protecting Yourself from Scammers" - Learning how to identify and avoid scholarship and financial aid scams, understanding how these scams work, and how to research scholarships and financial aid opportunities safely and responsibly. Session 3: "Ads and Auctions: How to Avoid Being Scammed" - Understanding the risks of purchasing goods online, how to identify fake ads and auction sites, and how to protect yourself from fraud when buying goods online. Session 4: "Social Media Scams: Protecting Your Identity and Privacy" - Learning how scammers use social media to trick young people into revealing personal information, the dangers of sharing personal information online, and how to protect your identity and privacy on social media. Session 5: "Contests, Scholarships, and Employment Offers: How to Avoid Being Scammed" - Understanding the dangers of paying fees or making deposits for contests, scholarships, or employment offers, how to identify and avoid these types of scams, and the importance of researching any opportunity thoroughly before committing to it. Session 6: "Free Services: How to Avoid Hidden Charges" - Understanding the dangers of free services offered to young people, how to recognize and avoid offers that come with hidden charges, and the importance of carefully reading the terms and conditions of any service before signing up. Session 7: "Phishing: How to Avoid Taking the Bait" - Understanding the dangers of phishing scams, how to identify and avoid phishing attempts, and the importance of protecting personal information from scammers who use phishing tactics. Session 8: "Work-at-Home and Telemarketing Scams: How to Avoid Being Fooled" - Understanding how scammers use work-at-home and telemarketing offers to trick young people, how to identify and avoid these types of scams, and the importance of being skeptical of easy money schemes and offers. The flexible schedule (Flex Class) allows your learners to watch the pre-recorded videos and do them at a time that is FUN for them! You can also spend extra time on the topics your child is most interested in. Since this is a flex class with no live meetings, students can log in at a convenient time to complete the week's lesson. We will be going through each week as a group and I will post the lesson weekly (depending on which day you started). It's not hard to scam young people or anyone for that matter. They tend to be inexperienced, have trusting natures, and often want to fit in, making them ripe pickings for fraudsters and scam artists, who know just how to take advantage of young people. The flexible schedule (Flex Class) allows your learners to watch the pre-recorded videos and do them at a time that is FUN for them! You can also spend extra time on the topics your child is most interested in. Since this is a flex class with no live meetings, students can log in at a convenient time to complete the week's lesson. We will be going through each week as a group and I will post the lesson weekly (depending on which day you started). The videos will contain the information required to give students a good understanding of each topic, and each one will include homework for the students to undertake during the week. Homework assignments will include writing a list of topics, interests and areas of expertise in which the students might be interested in developing. After watching each video and completing the homework assignments, students will be provided with feedback and the specific next steps to make their vision a reality, including how to write a personal development plan. Timeframe for the Week: Mondays - Teacher will post the information needed for the week. Tuesdays-Wednesday - The teacher can answer any questions pertaining to the topic of the week. The students will need to complete any homework assignments and answer any questions in the class. Thursday - Students need to have all tasks completed and uploaded in the classroom. Friday - The teacher will provide feedback to the class and individual students, students will also be able to engage in peer to peer review and be able to discuss how they went about completing the tasks. Saturday - Sunday - Teacher will be available to answer any questions that the students may have for the week or the next week. -Learn how to stay vigilant and keeping up to date with the latest internet safety information, and how to have a responsible and ethical behavior online.
Overall, the class aims to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves from scams, frauds, and deception while using the internet, by teaching how to recognize and avoid internet scams, how to safeguard personal information online, how to use the internet responsibly, and how to react to internet security issues and how to stay safe online.

Scams can really negatively affect the person who has been tricked. It can be hard talking about this issue if it has happened to you or someone close to you. It doesn't matter how intelligent you are, anyone can fall for these tricks. I will cover the emotional affect it can have on a person which might be worrying to some.
