1 hour per week. A Kahoot! activity along with a handout will be sent to students after class to help them review what we have done during class.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this Self-Paced class, students will have the freedom to learn spelling guidelines. Often times, these kinds of classes are done for younger students, but I have learned from my own classroom experience, that older students can benefit from this as well. Some students have trouble spelling because they cannot remember the guidelines for spelling and some were never taught the guidelines for spelling. I usually communicate with students on a weekly basis to see if there are any questions. There is a review handout and a Kahoot activity that students can use. It is up to each family whether or not they would like to use these review materials. If families want to complete the review materials and also want feedback, the handouts need to be uploaded to me each week. I review these as quickly as possible and return with any notes I may have made. My goal is to create a meaningful class where students grow in experience and confidence. I hope that students feel comfortable asking questions, encouraging, and challenging one another to improve their spelling. Spelling can seem overwhelming. By breaking down the spelling rules, and using them as guidelines, students will find success! Students will have opportunity to ask questions and engage with other students. This class will use a combination of lecture, PowerPoint/google slides, handouts, interaction, Kahoot!, and class participation for those who are comfortable with it, to assist students with learning.
Learning Goals
Students will learn guidelines for spelling to help them become more independent spellers. In this class we do not look at grade level spelling lists. We use the guidelines we learn and apply them to spelling multiple words.
Syllabus
20 Lessons
over 20 WeeksLesson 1:
Short and Long Vowel Sounds
I use this lesson as a foundation because I have met a number of students who struggle to identify short and long vowel sounds. We will go over a, e, i, o, u.
Lesson 2:
Using y and w as vowels
Sometimes these letters work like vowels in words. We review times when this may happen.
Lesson 3:
Schwa Sound
We go over how this affects the sound of vowels. Every vowel can make this sound.
Lesson 4:
Digraph QU
QU work together as a team. We go over the sounds that QU make in English words. We also look at a few examples of words that we have borrowed from other languages in which QU makes a different sound.
