US Grade 4 - 7
In collaboration with the author of "Go Figure! A totally cool book about numbers", this course will explore a new math theme each week. This is a flex class so there will be no "live" lessons. The lessons will be available through Nearpod and classroom discussion. We will have fun with numbers and learn about their history. It is not a math skill class. Nearpod is a free tool for students to engage with the material through presentations, videos, interactive assessments, and games. It will also include opportunities for student collaboration. Each week, I will post the Nearpod lesson with the link to the material as well as an introduction message for the weekly topic. Students may progress at their own pace throughout the week. I will also post several math-related challenges in the classroom where students can respond with their answers through a post or a picture of their work. Students will also share their questions and research around the topic. Week 1: Where do numbers come from? - How did counting begin? - How do different cultures use numbers (Mayans, Romans, Egyptians, Indians) Week 2: Magical Numbers - Magic squares - Fibonacci Sequence - Golden Ratio Week 3: Big numbers - Infinity - Prime numbers - Pi - Square and Triangular Numbers - Pascal's triangle Week 4 Mathemagical tricks - Magic calculator - Domino trick - Impossible pairs - Riddles Week 5 Shaping up - 3 sides - 4 sides - shapes with many sides - 3rd dimension - cones and curves Week 6 World of Maths - chance - chaos - freaky fractals - logic

Math is often something students dread. My goal is to make the topic of math fun and help students get excited about how numbers work. I have taught math classes from developing numeracy (understanding the correspondence of numbers to objects) through beginning algebra. The author of the book on which I am basing my course has offered additional resources as well!
