Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Welcome to January where we celebrate a new year and set goals for ourselves to do and be better than the year before. Another thing we celebrate is Martin Luther King Day and call this day, Day of Service. So what better way to start the New Year off than by challenging yourself to serve others.

We are so used to the “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King and don’t realize he has many speeches and sermons that deserve the same recognition. My favorite and the focus of this class is called, “The Drum Major Instinct” where he focuses his sermon on being great at serving.

“Everyone Can Be Great Because Everybody Can Serve”

Students will be given a workbook that I wrote, a few pages at a time to focus on an excerpt from this sermon/speech. They will then be given discussion questions and reflection questions.

We will not read the whole passage but look closely at a few snippets and excerpts. We focus on words and the meaning behind them. Understanding what MLK meant by these words. Students are encouraged to read it on their own or with family.

Overview of the class will include discussion questions, short answer responses, activities, and the 7-day service challenge focusing on their passions and how they can serve that area.

Class 1: Overview and What is the Drum Major Instinct + Discussion Questions
Class 2: New Definition of Greatness + Partner PSA Project (Creating a digital poster or video)
Class 3: MLK's Eulogy + Discussion Questions
Class 4: Planning My 7-Day Serice Challenge + Implementation (can be done individually or with a partner)
