CLASS HOLIDAY POLICY FOR MS. STACEY’S FLEX CLASSES

Holidays are very personal to each person. Sometimes a student will not take a class that crosses a holiday. Please touch base. I am VERY flexible with dates. If your family celebrates a holiday that a FLEX class ‘meets’, let me know and I’ll extend the class on the week that you need to be out, your materials will be posted the week you return.

As we walk into the end of the year Holidays, know that I will be adding a week to each session that crosses Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. I will NOT add those dates until we cross the Holiday, all work that would have been due the holiday week, will not be due until that make-up week.

If you've looked at my course list, you've seen how much I love English. I love the interesting way that words come about and how they go together. I love it when an author cobbles together the right words that help me to see their point of view. I love the ability to communicate and share my own ideas intelligently.

That's the thing about learning Grammar, if you only see that you are learning RULES...it becomes a drudge. But when you look at Grammar from the standpoint of connection, our connection with other human beings, in a world where miscommunication and disconnection are the norms, it's easier to see the joy in it. Look, I'm not saying that Grammar is going to bring about world peace, but it will help your student to understand what is being said, and to intelligently express their own thoughts and ideas in an ever more text-driven world.

In this 15-week course, we will explore the rules behind the written English language. How do the words fit together? What are parts of speech and what do they do? There will be a lesson video each week and I will provide homework and digital tests for a week’s worth of independent work. Please expect your student to work from 30-45 minutes per day, 4 days per week on the materials outside of class.

While asynchronous, this class is very interactive. Each week there will be videos and quizzes, games or inspirational lessons to play with. And, as with all of my classes, I'm very active in the classroom with comments and personalized videos to help your student on their path.

Every family will work a little differently with the material, here is one idea for how the lessons may lay out in your home.

Monday, get up, print out your Grammar Binder and view the lesson video, working through the classroom practice with me.
Tuesday, work through Independent Pages 1 and 2
Wednesday, Check the classroom. Find a mini-lesson from me to practice your skills. Leave me a comment or maybe even a video of your own.
Thursday, work through Independent Pages 3 and 4
Friday, Check the classroom. Use the Student Key Sheets to check your Independent Work for the week. Discover that you are a GRAMMAR PRO. Take your test, and, of course, ACE IT!

So you are able to see the breadth of our Semester 2, I will include approximate project plans for the semester below. Please, make sure to reference the Outschool Classroom Page for final assignments. All class materials and videos will be available in the classroom at midnight (Mountain Time) on Monday mornings.

Parental Guidance
This class uses a couple of different tools off of Outschool proper. The tests are created on Google Forms and while I do ask for a name (first name is fine) so that I can keep the tests separate, there is no login or student email needed. I also use Kahoot! which is a website that allows me to create quizzes. Kahoot! will also require a name (first names and nick names are fine)...there is no login or student email needed.
Supply List
I will provide printable materials.

Your student will need a place to keep all of their reference materials, as we will be referring to them throughout the class. It is probably best to keep a dedicated folder or at least a section of a larger folder specifically for this class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Stacey Hamlin, and I love to teach.

I believe that we can learn anything and everything…with a few tools, and the ability to lay down our fears and try.

As a kid, I moved a lot. By the time I was 14 years old, I’d been to or through 42 states. I understand that “displacement” that people feel right now…that “loss of connection.” I believe that I homeschooled my own kids for 16 years to help alleviate that disconnectedness for them.

When my dad finally changed careers, he got “us” into Technology, and convinced me that I could teach. At 17 years old, I taught a group of men my father’s age how to use an Accounting Software that my father had programmed. It was terrifying…right up until I discovered that he had been right.

Nowadays, I teach a lot of things; English, Drama, Math…but behind every lesson is the desire to help people connect and overcome their fears. Life is hard. It’s hard when you are big, and in some ways, it’s even harder when you are small and other people make your decisions for you. It becomes easier when you realize that you are not alone…and that you really can do things that you didn’t realize that you could do.

This is a brand new school year with no mistakes in it. Let's see what amazing things we can accomplish, together.

See you in class,
Ms. Stacey
