Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Beginner - Advanced Level
Quick! Quick! Craft a story in a flash! โšก๏ธ

After direct instruction on essential story elements and characteristics of the week's genre, learners view a picture as inspiration. Then, they have 15 minutes to write FLASH FICTION, very short fiction that includes character, setting, and coherent plot with conflict and resolution.

Once their stories are finished, the teacher uses explicit instruction to improve word choice and sentence fluency, which learners immediately practice as they edit their pieces.

Peer Review & "Publication": Students share their stories with the class, and other learners offer positive feedback on their story elements, word choice, and sentence fluency. They also ask the author questions, giving the author valuable feedback on what parts of the story could be clarified and revised.

For homework, students revise and edit their story based on feedback and turn it in to the teacher for some professional editing and revision. ;)
