Class Experience

When we see someone doing the splits, we often think of them as mythical creatures and dub it an impossible task for ourselves. And while some people have a natural ability, it is completely possible to inch towards flexibility too!

Mixing a combination of pilates, yoga, and isometric exercises, we work through the different muscle groups of the legs to increase the flexibility of the side and middle splits. This class is best suited for youth training in physical activities like dance, sports, and acrobatics, and serves as a great way to get kids moving for a bit if they have been sitting too sedentary.

We begin class with a quick cardio warm-up to increase the heart rate/blood flow to warm the body. From there, we utilize dynamic and static stretches (both seated and standing) to lengthen and elongate the muscles while incorporating strengthening techniques as to not fatigue elasticity.

The primary emphasis in class is to utilize proper stretching techniques to minimize strain and maintain proper alignment. Modifications are offered to varying levels depending upon the abilities of each learner.

Increasing flexibility takes time. It's important to continue stretching to build muscle memory and maintain progress. Each week, Fitness Focus: Splits Training begins a new series of stretches to help students build a repertoire of practicable actions. Students are encouraged to stretch 10-20 minutes a day for the best possible results!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Please ensure your learner has a clean space (approximately their arm's length wide) that is free of distractions. I do ask that learners keep their webcams on for the duration of class so I can monitor and ensure safe practices.
Supply List
Learners may desire a yoga mat or soft surface as we will be doing a lot of floorwork. Those with increased flexibility may like to have a yoga block or resistance band for advanced modifications.
Additionally, I encourage learners to wear appropriate layers. A light sweater at the beginning of class helps warm the body faster and as the class progresses it can easily be removed if they become too hot.
Please have water nearby for hydration.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been studying dance for 25 years and am a certified personal trainer and dance teacher. Keeping our bodies agile and moving is so vital for growing youth. As we spend more time sedentary at a computer or couch, we are finding it harder and harder to live an active lifestyle. It's not always easy to get up and work out on your own, and I love the comradery when a group comes together with a similar goal of being active!
