Class Experience

Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel is a Newberry Medal Award Book. First and second graders will enjoy listening to a read-aloud and at the same time will strengthen their reading comprehension skills. The focus of reading comprehension courses isn't decoding text (reading). It's really diving into the text and understanding what's read. The teacher will read aloud the story (or parts of the story) at both classes. then guided by the teacher, students and teacher will work together on pages that were sent before class. This 2-part course will focus on the following reading comprehension skills:

Class 1- Main Idea & Details
As the teacher reads, she will guide them to use their handouts to write down or draw things Toad does from his list. Then they will make their own to-do lists just like Toad does.

Class 2- Vocabulary & Answering 5W Questions
Students will explore multiple meanings of the word "soon" on their handout. They will talk about and answer questions that begin with Ws-who, why, what, where, and when.

Updated Policies:
~ I return parent and student messages from classroom posts and inquiries three times a day-early morning, early afternoon, and early evening, Central Standard Time. I usually check and read them more often than this.
~ I do not usually return messages on United States national holidays, i.e. Thanksgiving, Independence Day.
~ If you need a more immediate response, please indicate your class and issue in the subject box, as applicable. If you don't receive a more immediate response, this usually means that I am actively teaching a live or recorded class, or preparing for one in the next few minutes, or I cannot answer for some other reason.
~ If you enroll in a culinary course, you will receive the first recipe via Outschool message. Please allow me at least a couple of hours to get this out to you, as I teach classes at various times of the day. All subsequent recipes will be posted in the classroom chat, and will not be emailed to you individually.
~ I can only attach photos (i.e. of recipes, crafts) to student accounts on Outschool, and not parent accounts.
 Thank you very much!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm a CURRENTLY certified teacher in Illinois. I am licensed in Regular and Special education, with an M.Ed. (Master of Education in Education) and State-Endorsed (extra training and certification) in English Language Arts and Social Sciences. My B.A. is in Psychology, with training in counseling, child development, motivation theory, and abnormal development. My graduate and post-graduate studies continued my focused knowledge in child growth, development, and language development; and and teaching children with physical, emotional, behavioral, psychological and learning disabilities.

Along with education, training, and credentials, I have two decades of experience, beginning as a paraprofessional for a little girl with spina bifida, progressing from substitute teacher during grad school, to full-time classroom teacher. These experiences were varied and included grades pre-l through eight. During my years as a classroom teacher, I also taught Summer School (Extended School Year) in an Early Childhood Classroom, encompassing students with disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, Vision and Hearing Impairment, Intellectual Disability, Behavioral Disability, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, ADHD, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and Mood Disorders/Emotional Disabilities. I grew up with a sibling who is cognitively disabled, and have children with disabilities. I encourage and welcome students of all abilities into my Outschool classroom.

I love reading, writing, dogs, cats, nature, lap swimming, walking my dogs, volunteering, and teaching. 🙂
